Hey guys after a lot of reading i am finally going to get turbo'd. I have a 1999 GS with 145,xxx miles and i just did a compression test and i got 200 across the board with no deviation. You can guess how surprised i was.

I am going to buy the treadstone turbo kit. I know its not the best but it fits my budget. I'm going to exchange the normal intercooler with one that fits and looks a little better. I also have a walbro high pressure fuel pump and a Vortech FMU 12:1 on their way.

The only questions i have at the moment is what size turbo should i go with. I am planning to boost 8psi for about 6 months until i can rebuild with forged internals. The options are from 50 trim 0.48 a/r to 60 trim 0.63 a/r. I want a turbo with quick spool but i want to be able to turn up the boost later one when i rebuild. Thanks a lot

I don't remember what they use in the kit, but that one should be plenty fine for a long while. It is a Turbonetics T3 turbo I think. You can upgrade to another one when you order, but I would think the one they put in the kit already is fine.

EDIT:
BTW, you seem to know what you are doing from just reading so good job man. You have done your research and that is a tough thing to do when preparing to turbo.

hehe thanks this is a great community it seems that every question has already been answered many times.

The kit comes with a Turbonetics t3/t4 turbo and they ask you which size you want when you order.

Arlighty I just ordered the kit, with the treadstone tr10 intercooler and the turbonetis 60trim 0.63 a/r turbo

I personally suggest not exceeding 6psi with the 12:1 FMU setup right now. From my personal experience you get some pretty erratic fuel curves at those pressures (you'd basicly be maxing out the walbro's max pressure even with their high pressure model) and the stock injectors become less than reliable too.

I didnt realize that i would have problems with this flue setup. This is what most people recommend.

It's the simplest and is all that's necessary for low boost, however, it is also the least useful

If you don't want to spend $1000+ on a portfueler, or mess around with Megasquirt or a custom 8 injector setup, the choice is the Vortech SFMU. Many people have used this up to 15+ psi. You can use it with your stock injectors and with larger than stock injectors. Normally people can run up to 440's or dsm 450's (with resistor pack) without having to use a safc to control idle. It uses different discs and springs to adjust the rise rate of fuel pressure and you can change your idle/static fuel pressure based on the injectors you have. There are a few other features also. ALthough it cannot compare with a portfueler or megasquirt, it is a pretty good option for someone wanting to run lower boost without the extreme fuel pressures that come with using stock injectors and a 12:1 fmu. Of course if you keep the stock injectors in, you will still have to run the high fuel pressures regardless of whether you have a 12:1 fmu or the sfmu

the reason i don't want to get a smfu right now is because eventually when i rebuild ill probably run megasquirt so i don't want to spend the money on something i will replace in 6 months.

So what is the simplest fuel system to run 8psi at? If the fmu is going to cause more problems ill just get a sfmu

I felt the same way as you... I ended up having an FMU a little longer than expected, but at least I didn't blow $200-$300 on an S-FMU that I'd end up selling.

I'd say go for just the FMU right now. It's good that you know your long term goals. That usually makes things much less costly.

Well, the only issue you will have with the FMU right now at 8 PSI is there isn't any way to tune it with the stock fuel system in use and you are pushing the stock injectors pretty hard. Other than that its a decent way to go to hold you over. If you plan on a rebuild so soon, I still say go with around 6 PSI instead to keep things a bit more reliable for the time being. Granted, once the boost bugs gets you you'll be at 8 PSI in no time anyways so I know Im wasting my breath lol.

Alright heres an update
I got the
fuel pump
fmu
fcd
boost, oil pressure, fuel pressure and a/f gauges
Waiting for the gauge pod and short shifter

the turbo kit still hasn't been shipped, i sent treadstone the money on February 6th and they keep on making delays. They better ship it next week or I'm gonna ask for my money back.

Im gonna install the fuel pump fmu and fcd this weekend wish me luck.

My impressions of the kit so far well is its cheap,
The manifold feels cheap, the turbo sits on a slight angle, the turbonetics wastegate has to be modified to fit on to the manifod. It does not line up to the holes on the manifold so the holes on the wg have to enlarged.

The packaging on the kit was horrible, every package inside was damaged The bags were ripped so there were screws everywhere. However none of The components were damaged as far as i can tell.
The wastegate flange was not included
I specifically asked for a different intercooler (I specified on the phone and again in an email, and he agreed) He still sent me the regular one.I emailed him about it and he said the kit is designed for this intercooler....

It took treadstone almost a month to ship, He (Jason Stone) kept on making delays, "We dont have the turbo in stock, i have a shipment comming on monday" "The turbo didnt arrive this week, i have another shipment comming in next week" ect
And about shipping He said "shipping to Ca will cost $200 shipping, via USPS, i can save you over $150 customs fees this way, rather than fedex" He still sent it using fedex haha

I am not trying to bash treadstone but this is not how business should be handled. If i could do this again i would buy the hahn kit. I guess you get what you pay for.

The turbonetics evolution wastegate didn't come with a flange. It is 35mm however the only flange i can find here in canada is a tial 38mm flange. Will it work?

Do you mean a flange to bolt up the wastegate to the exhaust? If so, it's not necessary that you bolt up one to it. It will just get really loud whenever it opens up otherwise. But to answer your question, Yes, a 38 mm should work, it will just be a little bit bigger.

yeah i thought about venting the wg to the atmoshphere but im trying to keep the sleeper look emoji

so i got the 38mm tial flange and it fitts no problem

today i got the exhaust off, and im getting ready to tap to oil pan and install oil lines

edit: well you got me thinking about dumping to the atmooshere, how loud is it. Are there any sound clips or videos ? Are there any performance benifits of one vs the other

Do you mean a flange to bolt up the wastegate to the exhaust? If so, it's not necessary that you bolt up one to it. It will just get really loud whenever it opens up otherwise. But to answer your question, Yes, a 38 mm should work, it will just be a little bit bigger.

I could be wrong but are you talking about just letting the wastegate vent into the engine bay?? If so, would that not be throwing a heck of alot of 1600 degree exhaust into your engine bay?? Or are you talking about at least having a dump tube?

Yeah, just letting it vent into the engine bay. 1600 degree exhaust, I hope not lol. More like 1300-1400, but for how long it stays open and for how little it opens, it's not going to hurt anything. Many people have been running setups like that for years with no problems. I have been doing it for about a half a year and haven't had a problem.

Yeah, I'm doing the same thing... I just never got around to making a dump tube, and now that I'm getting ready to upgrade, it seems senseless to make one now.

so if i drill the oil pan and thread this fitting into it, and then put a washer and bolt on with some loctite it should work right?

It's possible, but I wouldn't put money on it.

The proper way to do it is to either weld a fitting on, bolt on another flange (yes, that means drilling three holes), or using a bulkhead fitting.

The bulkhead fitting uses big nylon washers and has more threads on it to make sure the thing stays put.

I would invest in a different fitting and have it welded on. That would work out the best imo. I don't know if I would trust using that fitting they included for the oil pan and not have it leak.

No real advantages besides being easy to take off the downpipe (not having to unbolt pipe from the wastegate) I would think. No I am not running any thing from it, just bolted it up to the manifold. I'll try to find a pic of my engine bay and post it up.

It didnt look like they have ever welded a external wastegate lol

The only part thats left is the intercooler piping and the install is done emoji

Here's a pic of my setup on the old eclipse. The open wastegate doesn't really hurt it.

ivan300, I would tuck that power steering line cooler behind the intercooler so the lines don't get bent. Otherwise looks like it's coming along nicely.

Make sure the center section of the turbo with the oil lines is straight up and down. Looks like yours is clocked slightly sideways. I'm not sure if it will affect it too much, but I'm just letting you know.

the oil lines are straight up it just looks wierd in the picture.

wow the intercooler piping is a pain in the... i spent 210$ cdn on couplars they arent cheap lol. i set up everything temporarely( i had to go to work) and went for a small drive around the block i hit boost for one second and blew one of the couplers off doh. it was fun though hehe

the wierd thing is the turbo started spooling at 2000rpm in second gear, i wasnt expecting it that soon its a 60-1 0.63 a/r so im not complaining hehe.

my ghetoo oilpain fitting isnt leaking (yet hah) but the ss feed line treadstone provided is. The ends of the line are aluminum i belilive and i stripped the threads. so tomorrow im going to buy a good ss line.

I have to get used to my car making wierd sounds i keep on thinking something is going to blow up ahah

finished everything this morning. the front bumber didnt quite fit so i drove around without it heeh. It feels like a new car.

the car sounds awesome with a full 3" and no cat. I set off car alamrs haha

im loving it. I cant wait till tomorrow so i can finish it and drive around all day haha

i have one question, the blowoff valve is a knock off of a greddy rs. However i lost the screw that screws in the top of it and its leaking vacum. Can i just close up that hole?

You can't just tap the pan, it's too thin to have any threads on it. You'll need to either use a bulkhead fitting (of which I have an extra...) or weld on a steel fitting.

If i could do this again i would buy the hahn kit. I guess you get what you pay for.

My friend Josh (DSMCrazy3) bought the manifold through them and Jason made a bunch of delays as well. Said it wasn't in stock, when on the auction it said "in stock" and "ready to ship". I thought it was maybe a fluke, but apparently it's not by what you said here.

I'm not too fond of Treadstone. Like Mike said, they kept delaying my manifold. I don't see how the turbo can be sitting at an angle on the manifold though. They should all be based off of one mold. Mine sits fine. As well as the wastegate mating up.

I definitely wouldn't order something of large magnitude from them, if anything.

Yeah I ordered a few gaskets and the oil feed and they were fine. I was very scepticle about anything else.
