#98339, "A/T and Turbo?"

Hi there.
I bought a '99 Eclipse GS for about 5 weeks ago.
Now i want to power it up...
I have automatic transmission, does this stop me from turbocharging?
How much can the A/T handle?
Is installing the turbo on an a/t any different from installing on a manual transmission?

Thanks in advance..

No it doesnt stop you from turbocharing, but you cant use a sidemount intercooler.I have an auto trans ill be boosting pretty soon when i get time to install it and gather up a few more things. It should handle a stage 2 turbo on 8psi but depends on the condition of the transmission, idk how much more it will take than 250hp.Someone on here did some serious carnage to their auto trans at like 350hp,and he was breaking hard parts not the soft parts.I'd reccomend at least a shiftkit and 4 or 6 pass transmission cooler.Invest in some final drive gears too.hope this helps

I'm auto and run a stock 2G SMIC with my own custom piping just fine. If you are using a standard aftermarket kit like one from Hahn Racecraft or Star Performance the sidemount won't fit like he said. I'm probably pushing between 250-275 crank HP to my auto tranny and have for a good 6K miles now without a single problem. Definitely get a trany cooler to prolong the life of your tranny though.

Also remember you lose more power through the a604 than the nvt350.Change the fluid/filter when you turbo too and add some friction modifier.Or at best flush it and replace with atf+4 talk to infinite hes the a604 god i hear.haha

Yeah, the A604 sucks nearly 27-28% of your power away compared to the nvt350's 20%. Going with the final drive gear mod, a shift kit and the tranny cooler will help you get more usable power to the ground though emoji

Funny, My HRC SMIC fits just fine on my 97 ATX...

No need to add friction modifier... or any other snake oil. Just use the proper fluids, and add a tranny cooler to prolong life of your tranny.

There was a writeup that the smic with the HRC kit wouldnt work on auto trannys unless it was mounted at an angle.
Original poster read this.

What turbokit should i go for? Im looking at either:

Hahn Racecraft Stage 2 Kit
or
Star Performance Stage 2 Turbo Kit 1995-1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse/Talon Non-Turbo

Will these fit with ATX?

And, to upgrade my ATX with finaldrive, shiftkit and cooling, where can i find these parts? (Direct link is much appreciated! emoji

Edit: Brakes and exhaust will also be upgraded. Any suggestions?

Fits just fine on my 99 ATX too. Some of the earlier 95's needed some sheetmetal under the fusebox sawzall'ed out, but there's no reason to mount the IC at an angle.

PLEASE Don't put anything in your transmission but Mopar 7176E.
(7176E is sometimes called "ATF+3")

Just my opinion, but converting to even a stock MTX is a far cheaper and less time-consuming project than doing all the ATX mods. Not to mention the results are much more rewarding.

I agree.

3rd vote here, done both routes.while the a604 held fine and it was ok, car just feels "lighter" with the MTX

I agree also but I think he wants to keep his a604(for some reason lol.)Infinite says flushing and replacing with atf4 will lower temps about 50 degrees.Maybe i was misinformed. And for brakes id go with some front brakes off of a gsx.Thats the route im going and I personally wouldn't bother with converting the drum to discs since they only do 10-15% of the braking.More of an aesthetics mod imo.I would recommend the 3" Tsudo N1(Apexi if you got the cash) or the GReddy evo2.

I was actually looking at a Apex'i N1..

I don't have to keep my ATX, but what would the price difference be?

If someone would help me put together a list of parts to buy, that wold be much appreciated!

most cars had to have the sheetmetal removed to run the piping under the fuse box. Some cars had an inspection plate you could remove that would give you room to move the wiring over and route the pipe through the remaining space.

One of the meets we had to do this to a 95/96. My 96 wasnt any different. both my 97's were the same also. I would have had to cut all three of mine if i were going with a sidemount or ANY HRC piping.
