At first, I (as many others here have inquired) thought going the custom turbo route would be a feasible goal. However, after doing a lot of research on parts pricing, and reading some turbocharging books, it become much more clear to me that going in that direction would be an unwise decision.
Merely finding core components that would save dollars such as an exhaust manifold and a turbo with all the extras, not only didn't make sense from a dollars standpoint, but included troublesome issues regarding parts accessibility, technical know-how, turbo interchangeability and the need for instructions or technical assistance in completing a technically involved installation. If the only thing involved were slapping on the turbo, oil lines, exhaust manifold and downpipe, I'd agree with your point. However, when you include the other more important parts of the install, including fuel lines, the resulting connections, overhauling the stock fuel returnless fuel system, and including a need for a fuel cut defenser, the job gets daunting, tenuous, and expensive.
Sometimes, it indeed is worth it to spend a little more money for a quality fit and finish. And as nice as your system looks (and am sure is from a reliability standpoint), I'm sure it required a lot of knowhow and thrift from finding the needed parts. Moreover, the finish of the product doesn't appears as aesthetically pleasing, and the accessibility of the turbo, also doesn't seem user-friendly(with the a wastegate pipe channeled right over the compressor).
I applaud your work, but from my own personal calculations and observations, I just don't agree with any proposition that encourages people to pursue turbocharging by way of any custom turbo setup (unless you're a "mechanic" with a lot of performance parts at your beck and call). The only true savings I found was from doing the install myself. Other than that, there really is little savings to be found.
Even if the whole "stage 1" backyard system is attainable for less than ~$1500, is that cost savings worth the potential nightmare results? (many quality turbos, by themselves, can cost brand new at about $700-$1100)
