#96707, "oil spraying/spilling out of dipstick under boost... just rebuilt engine.. HELP"
Aug-11-06 11:44 AM by 420agreenvilleSC

I have a 99 eclipse 420a turbo automatic tranny'd eclipse. I just recently blew my motor due to overboost/lean conditions. I rebuilt it to spec using stock internals again because I couldnt' afford to go forged just yet.

Anyway, i've installed it and properly broke it in. Just recently, even though i've been boosting 6 lbs for a while since the rebuild, I've started more and more smoking under full boost (6lbs. front mount intercooled). The smoke looks white, but smells like oil. I never could tell, but never really looked for a blue hue in the smoke.

Today, I thought i'd pull a nice one and boosted fully at 6lbs and very quickly i noticed when i pulled into a parking lot, after i noticed white smoke behind me, oil had sprayed onto my valve cover, my manifold, and the front of the block. I know for sure it is coming from the oil dipstick.

I do have great compression numbers (195 across the board), and my spark plugs, and galley's are oil free and look good too, and i also have a crankcase vent. system, so why under full boost do i have so much oil coming out????

I've just done another compression test since the last one a week ago or so and the numbers are the same... 195 across the board. My crankcase system is not clogged either. checked that too. Spark plugs look great again also.

One thing that is of some concern though. My oil level is higher than what the "max" is. Would that cause the system to spray out the dipstick under boost?? Anything else I can check would be good to know. I've ordered already a t3/t4 hybrid turbo rebuild kit thinking that my turbo seals have gone bad because it only happens under full boost.

Is it bad for a turbo car to have too much oil in the system?? I thought that would be a good thing because the turbo needs extra oil than the original aspirated engine does... i just dont know how much is.. too much..

A turbo doesnt even really need a lot more oil to keep it lubed up. If your smoking from your muffler and its white, I would lean towards a possible faulty headgasket, but if you say your compression is okay, you should be alright. You may be burning some oil though still, are you sure your PCV valve is okay? Drain some oil out though if your over the MAX line on the dipstick, that may as well be why you might be burning some oil.

I have a crankcase system and I checked that for oil, and/or if it was clogged, and its not either...

any other possibilities?? My pvc valve is ok too by the way...

i'l be draining some oil out later on, but if that doesnt fix the problem.. what else could it possibly be?

He just rebuilt the engine though with brand new pistons because he over boosted and ran lean and broke the ringlands on his other pistons. I just don't think that it is his ringlands because he JUST rebuilt, unless he got a bad set of pistons.

Just as an addon...blowing oil out of the dipstick is very common on the 4g63 due to excess pressure in the crankcase. In fact, my dipstick blew out completely on a run down the track last week. The fix: wire tie it down, even zipties work wonders.

Exess crank pressure tells you something though.

When I blew up my rebuilt motor running 10psi, I was going ....going. bam.....oil spitting out of my VC breather. pull the dipstick. puff puff puff. Compression test. 195 45 65 75

Drop bottom end. 3 busted ringlands.

I STILL don't see how you can have that much pressure just from having too much oil in there. I mean, I could see it happening if you put 7 litres in. but .5L won't cause that much pressure I don't think.

Oh, and it doesn't matter how fresh the rebuild is. If your pinging, your pinging and shit's gonna hit the fan.

it was too much oil in the system and I drained it (about half a quart) into a pan, and I checked my level again and it was ONN the max line instead of above it.

It is only because of excess oil in the system. Only explanation I can think of is the excess oil in the pan was kicked up enough to push through the piston seals and gained access to the combusiton chamber. At one point, while i was drifting around in a parking lot w/ lots of ppl watching, the exhaust was blowing white smoke for nearly 10 straight minutes.

It then cleared, next day check my compression, it was fine.

checked plugs, and everything... fine...

drained oil... problem fixed...

Okay, while your being cool drifting, If you do hard right handers, your oil will slosh against the left side of the oil pan. The pickup tube is on the right side so you can starve your engine of oil. You may or may not know this. I'm just saying emoji

Buy a windage tray, or sling it around until you kill it and get something RWD that can actually drift as opposed to just throw its ass around.

if i buy a windage tray, and a crankscraper, that will suffice for proper so called "drifting" correct?

also, nobody really answered my question about what cars are actually made for drifting... drifting, going sideways, they all make marks...

just because ur RWD doesnt mean u can't go sideways, main focus is the oil consumption problem.. if there even IS a problem...
