#96218, "Bov sound"

maybe its just me but after a year of listening to it my type -s has finally gotten on my nerves so i switched to a 1g bov and im not so sure i like the sound of it. Is there a way to change the sound or am i stuck with it? will it sound any different if i face it towards the back of the fuse box verse the radiator? and from experiance what the closest we can get to an srt bov sound?
thanks joe

its not that i dont like it its just getting old and im looking for a different sound thats all. the greddy has been a great bov for me but i want more of a gush of air over the psssttt. but the 1g is a good gush but not powerful or loud enough of a gush imo. im only running 8psi so maybe thats it i was just wondering if there was a way to modify the sound or amplify it on a 1 g cause it has the sound im after just not the magnatude of it.

it'll be pretty tough to sound similar to the SRT BOV , partly because its not exactly a normal BOV. More of a diaphragm so to speak.

Have you looked into possibly the HKS RFL, its so loud its almost obnoxious, But if loud is what your looking for look at that one.

I've had my BOV on my SRT4 for 2 months now, getting hard pipes and a greddy type s. The chuff gets annoying after a while.

If you're wanting to stray away from the hard metallic vent sound of the Type-S then the Type-RS will be a great buy for you. I don't have any personal experience with it though and I've never had great luck with getitng the Type-S to hold anything past 20 psi reliably.

Got my type rs today and installed it. At first i couldnt get it to do anything i loosened the screw all the way and it was to tight still, so i did the type-s mod and took it apart and removed the bigger of the two springs.

Now if i have it half way loosened i get a nice dump kinda the sound i was after whoooooshhhhh!

funny thing is if i tighten it up most of the way i get the exact sound of the type -s ??? wtf?
that means this guy is universal and can be the type rs and the type s.

just another question though as the car is idling should you or should you not feel air gushing out of the dump hole on the bov? and than when you rev it closes up and you get no air till throttle is released and air blows off?
cause with both springs i couldnt feel any air at all during idle or blow off??

I just did the same thing joeck, i removed the bigger (stronger) spring my type-rs and it leaks now. It didnt leak before though when it had both springs in it. I can now make it go off @ idle louder too. I dont know if it will hurt anything or not cuz it still seems to be open obviously since it is letting air out of the piping. I dont know if this is considered to be a boost leak or what. I dont really think it matters, but lets see what the others have to say since I am in the same boat as you... I havent heard it yet though driving around under a lot of boost, just at idle emoji

I would think and again (this is just a guess) but i would not think its considered a boost leak if your bov is letting air out at idle, so long as it closes up tight and seals under full throttle it should be fine but im not pro so im with you on that one and id like to hear what others think. pop your hoods start up your engines and place your hand in front of your dump hole on your bov at idle do you feel air or not?

I have had 3 diff BOV's and none have done it until I did this.

All I need to know is if its okay to run or not...

As long as the BOV isnt open at idle, it will be fine. You have to remember, when under boost, BOTH sides of the BOV are under positive pressure, so the BOV isnt relying on it's spring pressure alone to keep it shut. You should be able to make the BOV open at least a little bit, when you just free rev the engine quickly. If it doesnt, then the spring is a bit too tight, and if it stays open when it comes back down to idle, its too loose. I have the Turob XS H34 BOV, which is a recirculating BOV, meant for a 4g63 or similiar MAF equipped turbo engine. I recirculate the bov back to the turbo air inlet, so i keep my BOV relativly loose, because leaking at idle wont matter a bit. It stays fully closed under boost, even up to 18 psi so far.(I recirc the BOV outlet because its a bit quieter, and also helps keep the turbo spooled between gear shifts) The H34 is basically a RFL, but without the "cone" on the outlet. The outlet is just like the inlet, meant for a round hose connection.

Im totally lost now??? my bov is open while it idles and you can feel air comming out it, when i rev the car it closes during rev up and opens when i stop. from what your saying the bov should be sealed tight while the car is idling and only open after a rev? if this is the case im way to loose cause like i said mine leaks during idle but my type s did the same thing. is it possible the better route to go is with the bigger spring and take out the smaller one? instead of leaving the smaller one and removing the bigger one? all i know is under boost i have no leak but at idle the bov is open about 1/4 of the way.

Yeah, put in the stronger/bigger spring, so it's not open at idle. When you rev it up real quick, it should open at least a little bit, then close. You really dont want the BOV open at idle, then its possible to get unfiltered air into the intake.

i see your point and i will try the bigger spring but unfiltered air going in i dont think is going to be a problem as there is air constintly comming out the dump hole no way air is getting in. Thanks for the info though ill let you know what i come up with. Mike also let me know what you come up with as we can help each other with this issue till its fixed

Just bringing this back because we never got a deffinate answer as to if the BOV barely being open at idle, will harm/effect anything besides some unfiltered air possibly entering the chamber?

is it okay to run like this?
