#95521, "EGT probe install...should I?"

I am about to tap the #4 runner on my star manifold. I was wondering if it is best just to go ahead and take the turbo off then drill, or will it be okay to leave it on and drill with the car running? I really don't want to F* up my turbo that was just install? But i have a feeling those bolts are going to be a pain to remove? What should I do?

Take the extra time to remove the turbo, you don't want those metal shavings getting into your turbo and screwing up the blades.

its better to tap the #1 runner, it run the highest chance of running lean, a fact I learned AFTER tapping mine.

I tapped my manifold while the car was running, the shavings passed through the turbo with no problem, but YMMV

Sorry to hijack, but is it just me or don't people usually say to tap our #4 runner (closest to drivers side I think) Are you saying that it's better to tap the runner closest to the passenger side?

From using the search button....yes i did search....most people on this forum put their EGT probe on the forth runner because it runs the hottest temps giving you the most accurate reading

ya, tap 4th runner, dont worry about taking off turbo, just try using a magnetic bit, or have one near by to catch as many shavings as yuo can.

and what Im telling you is that the #1 runner on the passanger side is the most likely to run lean. theres nothing wrong with tapping the #4 but it is better to tap the #1

if you are going to leave everything on, you can have the car running while you drill and tap the hole, this will push the metal shavings out with the exhaust. Make sure you use tap oil as well so the threads are clean.

Now that's what I thought b/c it's the furthest injector from the fuel supply so it makes sense it would lean out more and therefore be hotter, but it seems every post on this forum says #4

Wear a pair of glasses as you drill the manifold w/ the car running -- the exhuast will push the shavings back out at you. I nearly lost an eye when I did mine, lol
