#94857, "Everythings installed, now a few questions"

A couple days ago I got everything installed, took it for a ride and no boost. Today I went to start it up again and noticed an exhaust leak at my wastegate gasket and fixed that. Took it for another ride and I could really hear it spool(to hear that for the first time put a smile on my face). I noticed when it started to spool I could hear what sounded (higher pitched whine) to be a leak at the bov. I got the fake greddy type s and when i was taking out the big spring I noticed the gasket was sortve glued on and it ripped a little bit so i think that might be it. After I get this typed Im going to get stuff to do a IC piping leak test.

When I came back I noticed that the turbines were actually spinning at idle which never did, do they just spin better as they break in? Also I noticed that the turbo was pretty hot and start to fade in color, my question is how hot is the turbo supposed to get after a 10 minute run? I got on it about 10 different times.

My turbo consists of.. Garrett super 60 turbo, streetsource manifold, custom 2.5 downpipe running a test pipe w. apexi catback, fmic intercooler kit from streetsource, fake type s, missing link, tial 38 wastegate 5lb spring, vortech fmu 12:1, walbro 255, aem uego wideband and other gauges.

manifold and turbine housing will turn with time to a rusted pos color, also turbo will get super hot almost immediatly, if you gave it 10 good pulls id say you should be able to fry up some burgers on the manifold and housing with no problem. sounds like you got a few leak issues other than that you should be good to go, great job on the install and welcome to the world of boost.

Were you feeling any gain in power at all? Go fix all the leaks, if that doesnt take care of it, its probably fuel pressure not being increased. I had the problem where I could hear turbo spool, yet no power. Fuel Pressure wasnt being increased.

Thanks, I guess Im just happy to be this far. Ive been working on this since december on and off since Ive been going to school full time and working full time.

I dont have any leaks in my IC piping, just got done testing that. Its still leaking before the wastegate so Im just going to get a new gasket. I can see how its hard to make boost when that leak is actually working like a wastegate thats stuck open.

I tested my FMU before install by pressurizing the vacuum line with just a regular air pump and the fuel pressure rose accordingly on my gauge.

Well come to find out the main manifold flange is warped and so is the wastegate flange, which is whats causing all the leaks. Ive heard many people having to get there manifolds from streetsource machined flat, I guess mines just another one to add to the list.. So be careful is you decide to get a manifold from them.

that sucks, do a search on ebay for a hahn manifold or buy on from hahn or star next time, i guess you get what you pay for but than again with what you paid for that manifold from streetsource you probably could have bought a hahn. get it all machined and reinstalled and let us know whats up, and you must post pics, you cant post turbo install done without pics. thats just flat out wrong! now if you will excuse me i have pop corn to pop lol.

I had my first Star manifold milled, has nothing to do with the manufacturer, luck of the draw.

if your turbo blades weren't spinning when you first started the car, that means you did not install the turbo right.. you connect the oil feed, but do not bolt it up to the exhaust mani, and then start the car and wait for oil to drip out the bottom. it makes a mess, but if your turbo isn't broken already I am sure it will be totally fine

your turbine housing starts a nice shiny gray color, but mine turned a stupid pinkish color after awhile. you can sand off the pink and then its an ugly iron gray. the turbo also gets amazingly insanely hot, i accidently touched mine checking my oil one day and it burned clear through my skin and cauterized the cut all at once.

Well I just figured if a company wants to sell you something then it should be done right the first time. I just dont think its right that I have to pay extra money to get it machined. I bought streetsources turbo kit and their intercooler kit specifically for ours cars. I lost count of cuts I had to make to the piping to get it to line up right.

I would go ahead and just buy another manifold but the wastegate flange on my downpipe is in a custom spot. Not so much custom, but i know it wouldnt line up right with another manifold.

I left my oil drain hose off until oil ran out when i first started the car. I never heard of doing it your way but Ill remember that for next time. It just seems to spin a whole lot better after it was ran for about a half hour.

Ill have pics when everything is finally done, probably some short videos too.
