#94803, "HELP with last few Turbo install details"

Hey guys. I am getting ready to install a Turbo kit I purchased and have researched pretty much everything. I already have the plumbing setup for the Oil feed & return lines on the engine and the Missing link installed. Everything else looks pretty simple with everything just bolting on. Only thing that has me a bit worried is the vacuum wiring and the fuel regulation. I want to make sure I have everything layed out the way I am going to install it so that there are no questions during installation. Can you let me know where the last couple of vacuum lines are hooked up to. This is what I have:

FMU - Back of Intake
Boost Gauge - T'ed to back of intake
BOV - T'ed to Brake booster line
External wastegate - ???
Manual Boost Controller - ???. This came with 2 pieces (A small box with 2 plugs and the main controller with 2 plugs and the turn knob)

On the SFMU, what do I have to adjust the pressure to on a Stock engine and what is the MAX boost I should run with Stock injectors.

Also, I don't like the way that the Outlet on my Turbo is facing up. Is there a problem if I unbolt it from the housing and make it face down to eliminate some of the intercooler piping. I'm running a FMIC and this would help me avoid having to run a U-bend from the outlet back down to the FMIC.

This is the setup that I am running:

T04E Turbo
3" Intercooler piping to fit my intercooler
Manual Boost Controller (I think whis goes between the Wastegate and it's vacuum source but not sure)
HKS SSQV BOV
35mm Wastegate (8PSI Spring Rate)
Vortech SFMU (Don't have any of the parts for this. Bought this used. Am I better off going with a NEW OBX 12:1 FMU I have?)
Walbro 255 Fuel Pump
Missing Link
Air/Fuel Gauge
Boost Gauge
EGT Pauge
Oil Pressure Gauge

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Probably a port on your compressor housing for this.

7-8psi max, you will be running really high fuel pressures and I believe they max out at about 110psi. When using SFMU idle FP should be between 47-55psi.

You should be Fine, search for clocking turbo, I am planning on doing this same thing this weekend.

Correct it goes on the vac line between wastegate and vac source

No just get the missing pieces, the sfmu is much more useful.

The pic of the Turbocharger I bought shows a port on the compressor housing but the one I received does not have it. It's marked but looks to be filled in. Should I drill and tap it back in? If so, what type of fitting should I put in? Thanks for the help.

not sure about fitting but yeah ur supposed to drill and tap with a fitting. then clamp on a vac line from the fitting to your wastegate boost port clamp that too.. oh yeah and for clocking the turbo all you have to do is loosen up the bolts around the turbo then you can move the snail piece around then retighten bolts. facing down would be the best.
external or internal wastegate?

Great. No wonder I couldn't figure it out. I was missing that port. So once I have the vacuum line hooked up from the wastegate to the compressor housing I am just supposed to splice in the manual boost controller between the 2, right? Do I even need to use the second part of the Boost controller with the 3 ports if I am installing it in the Engine bay? Can't I just connect the vacuum hose from the wastegate to the back port of the controller and the front port of the controller to the compressor housing?

Here is what I have on mine:

Bottom port of MBC (Hallman) to wastegate

Side port T'd off to the BOV line (unless someone says otherwise, do not even bother tapping into your compressor housing, just run it to the BOV)

Hope this helps.

Does your MBC give you consistant boost control hooked up this way? So I should just T of the MBC from the External Wastegate to the vacuum line between the BOV & Brake booster?

This will work, and I do it, but there is one problem with it. If you have a boost leak you are going to overwork the turbo a lot and its going to get spinning a lot faster b/c it will take longer for your wastegate to open. That and your boost pressure will not be stable. I have boost leaks and how much boost I see more or less depends on the weather and if those leaks have increased or decreased due to the expansion/contraction of the pipes and couplers. If you don't wanna tap the turbo or the bov line, then I would tap right after the turbo on your IC piping. From my personal experience, I wouldn't recommend the above setup unless if it's going to be temporary.

Ideally you want all your vacuum lines to run out of your manifold. and ideally you do not want to Tee off any other lines. This will eliminate any "weak vacuum signals" any of the various parts may get, thus making them all perform at their best.

To TAP or NOT TO TAP the compressor housing. That is the question. It makes more sense for this to be the signal point to the Wastegate to tell it when to open and also use a shorter vacuum line. On the other hand, I know the manifold will show the actual boost pressure going into the engine. Will the boost pressure already be built up at the compressor housing to activate the wastegate if I tap into it there?

Do not bother tapping, as has been said. Here, humor me. Connect it like I said (WG to MBC to BOV line) and see how it is. If you run into any problems (which you won't) then change it up then. It will take you all of two seconds to connect the lines as I have said (just use some small zip ties on the lines as they may blow off) and you will find it to work fine. It works great for me at 23 PSI, so really, you won't have a problem.

Sweet. I'll do that then. So I should have 2 lines with that setup:

1)Wastegate to MBC
2)MBC to BOV - T'ed to Brake booster line

That means there will be 1 T on the brake booster line to hook up the line going to the BOV and another T hooked up to that line going to the MBC, right?

That's about it, your engine will probably see a bit higher boost than your wastegate spring is rated at (ie 7psi and you see 8)

If you are going to go this route, make sure you check for boost leaks once in a while.

Also, put the vac line from the boost controller to the bov line closer to the brake booster. The farther you are away from it, the weaker the signal it will see and the higher your boost will be. This is how I ended up spiking 12psi on stock injectors which you definetly don't want to do. Basically sourcing farther away from the turbo and manifold acts in the same manner as a boost controller.

thats the main reason why i told him to drill and tap into turbo.. why bother t'ing off into brake booster line and having to worry all the time about wether he's leaking vac or not.. i would rather take my time and do it the right way the first time.. atleast u know your wastegate is getting a perfect signal. but im sure u must be in a hurry to get everything installed and start boosting so go ahead and do as everyone else in here said.. besides ive only been on this site for a little while now so everyone else must have more experience than me..
one question though, what spring are u using? if its the 5-7 or 7-9 spring i wouldnt use a boost controller for that, only turns up boost from what ur wastegate is set as...

It says it came with an 8 PSI spring installed. I have to check and make sure when I install it though. If my boost gauge is reading 8 PSI then I am not even going to install the MBC. I just wanted to know how to hook it up in case I did need it.

Hey guys. I'm down to the last few details with the installation. Hoping to have it done in the next 2 weeks. I really like the way it's turning out. I had to get another manifold because the one I originally bought had the flanges welded on wrong. The hood would not close. Do I have to use the Valve seat for the bottom of the Tial External wastegate? When I install it, the bottom of the wastegate no longer touches the mating surface of the manifold. If I do have to use it, should I still use the gasket between the Valve seat and the Manifold? I want to make sure I don't have a leak. TIA
