#94556, "EGT write up?"

is there a post or a write up on installing an EGT? ive been turbo about 8 months or so now with no issues but for safty purposes id like to go ahead and install one? i know its as simple as running a power wire and connecting a probe into your manifold but i wasent sure if theres a way to do it without drilling a hole in your manifold? probably a stupid question but is this something i want to attempt myself or should i get it done somewhere? i know you wanna tap the probe in the #1 runner about an inch or so away from the head? is that all there is to it? any help would be greatly appreciated, and if theres a way to do this without taking all my stuff apart again that would be nice too
thanks in advance
joe

There will be arguments on where to tap but I like the number 1 or 4 runner. I have heard good arguments for both. Some people will tell you to install in your dp too. My friend has his in the dp or his srt4 and the temps are way lower then mine. Like 600 degrees goint dow the road. I would tap a runner.

As far as a write up there Is one on tuners but the site is down right now so I cant post a link. Just make sure to get all the little pieces out of your mani after you tap it. Good luck

Thanks, yeah i been reading for the past few hours on it and i think im just gonna tap the #4 for 2 reasons really, 1 being it seems to be the popular demand and 2 being i want to tap it out to the side and if i do that at number 1 im gonna hit the dp or be awfully close to it. also sorry again but i never had to tap anything before, will it require welding or is it just as simple as tapping a hole threading it and screwing the probe in??

In fact they make tap and die (spelling?) kits out there that you can probably pick up at a local hardware store. Those usually come with everything you need except for a drill.

If you dont want to take the manifold off while you are drilling and tapping have the engine idling so the metal chips will be blown out the hole instead of through laying in the manifold to be sent through the turbine.

I actually ended up tapping between 3 ad 4 because on the hahn manifold that is where a good flat spot is and it didnt interfere with the elbow coming off of the turbo. To seal it up I used this liquid manifold weld stuff that supposedly gets stronger as it gets heated up. 2 years and no leaks yet so it seems to work.

well its finally in, it was as easy as pulling the manifold drilling and tapping like everyone said. I Decided to go against the grain and tap runner #1 i think it looks better there, anyway got it all hooked up and running and at idle im seeing around 900 and cruzing it goes to about 1000-1200, but if i get on it the temp really climbs from 1000-1400+ quickly. wow i see now why it is important to have this gauge, while under full throttle my a/f gauge is pegged green but my egt's climb quickly to 1400 and will go higher if i allow it. im sure i can find it if i searched but quick question what is a safe temp to let go at? i been dropping off at 1400 but i think i can go higher
thanks in advance

Okay, I was the same before the 450's. Now I cruise at 11 and under WOT the gauge slowly rises to 1400, hovers there till I finish 3rd gear 7k rpms, then i get to 4th and it dips down a bit again below 1400 and then slowly raises.

Thats after like 20-25 seconds of solid boost (9psi). I could NOT do thAT with the stock injectors. lol

Now I can actually make it down the racetrack and not have to let off. emoji

I'm so excited for May 10 th emoji

EDIT: Your blinky af gauge is wrong. Your not running "rich" as far as I'm concerned with stock injectors.

It would never happen. emoji

Even though you already have it in I would still like to post a link to this thread on sovadsm about installing an EGT probe.

http://www.sovadsm.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=132

Maybe this could be added to the main page write-ups?

wow these temperatures seem high, i mean 1400 degrees is hot enough to weld with much less 1600. so basically what everyone is saying is its perfectly normal to have egt's of well into the 1400 degree range cause i always thought the lower the temp the better off you are. what about if i get a s-afc and tune it to run around 1000 all the time is this possible? or am i way off here? i will be upgrading to 30# injectors soon but until than im just trying to get a feel for this egt. thanks for everyones input though its really been a big help.

Took it for its 1st real drive today and egt stay aroung 1400 while driving down highway at 80mph and sit around 1000 while driving around 30 mph. while boostin they go as high as 1550. it just feels weird driving down the road with a steady 1400 egt reading, guess its always been that way and i dint know it until i put the gauge in. Car runs excellent.
