#90809, "Do I need to make any major mods to my 420A before installing a small turbo kit?"

I have a 95GS and my engine is in awesome running condition, I have small upgrades such as intake pipe and manifold, headers n exhaust system and ignition coil, but to the point, I want to install a small turbo charger onto my 420A. Is there any major stuff I need to do to my engine before install this kit, such as better pistons or cam system, or can I run a small turbo on my engine as is, I know either way no matter what your taking a chance when you install a turbo but I dont want to install the turbo if I have a 200% chance of cracking my pistons or something, REMEMBER its a fairly small turbo I want to install, it isnt a 100 million dollar turbo..

First what is a $100 million dollar turbo? Second if you search here you will find alot. And Third.. Welcome emoji.. But as far as the turbo setup goes you will be fine up to about 10psi. Its fact that pistons go before our rods do but you will be ok as long as you get plenty of fuel to the engine. So before you start piecing a kit together you may want to start reading up on how to turbo our cars. You will have to do plenty of reading. The easiest thing you could do now though is do the supporting mods to turbocharging your vehicle. Begin with the fuel system. You can read up on that but it consists of a new fuel pump some additional lines and a new fuel management unit such as a vortech fmu or sfmu. If you have any questions we can help you but I recommend you search first so you dont ask repeated questions that we have all seen here before. And if you want to ask me anything personally you can. I am knowledgeable and can help you out on the contrary to what some may say because I have no installed my own turbo system but only because the lack of facility and time to do so. But good luck on your endeavour.

By the way most importantly, check the compresion of your engine. That is the most important factor in turbo'n your car. If the compression is not good on all cylinders you chance damaging the block more.

I came to this site about 2 years ago and didn't really know anything about rebuilding an engine and I knew nothing on how to turbo charge. Since then, I have spent MANY MANY nights reading for hours and hours upon end. Right now I rebuilt my car from the ground up including pistons, rods, and anything you can possibly think of to bolt on our motors. I just recently pieced together my own turbo kit to push 15psi and will finish it in the next week or so. The only thing I can say is read read read, you will learn so much and be capable of one hell of a car. I personally would build first and then turbo. It sounds like you don't really know enough to jump into a turbo kit to keep your car totally safe. (not saying I know a lot about turboing) If you really want to put a turbo kit on it, make sure you have the most confidence you've ever had in your car, or things can end up bad fast. Just read and you will learn, I am a perfect example of that. I hope I helped and good luck on whatever you decide to do, if you have a spare engine sitting around, I say go for it, but like ^^^^ said, make sure you have good compression numbers and everything is working tip top. Good luck bro.

10psi is a bit much if you plan on keeping the engine for awhile. It seems the consensus is 7, no more than 8 daily. Personally I'd keep it around 6-7psi daily if I wasn't planning on a rebuild any time soon. Some people will say differently I'm sure..

He does prove a valuable point. 10psi really is pushing it. You can push that much power but you really have to monitor the condition of the vehicle, if one little thing goes wrong with the fuel system or ignition at those numbers you could blow your engine quickly. As he said though 7-8 is plenty safe if you are intercooled, and will be enuff power to quench your thirst for awhile. But at this time I am wishing I had the motor built first because I really want to crank the boost up. It's a great feeling though just read! I wish I had more time and money to read up and put more work into the car but at this time I will have to wait.

fuel systems
sfmu vs fmu vs the hahn cartech unit

those topics alone should provide a lot of good info
oh and not to mention i didnt catch if you were stick or auto
but when i started boosting over 5psi my stock clutch died

First off, the replies while they are leading you on the right track aren't entirely accurate. Right now no one can tell you how much boost to run ... you haven't told us anything about the turbo aside from "fairly small" which doesn't mean much. T25 small, 14b, 13b, what? It's all dependent on the amount of air the turbo you choose will flow.

Secondly, when you say "this kit" what are you talking about? Which kit? One you're putting together, an HRC, Star, what? Then what is included in your kit. After you tell us that we can tell you what you're missing.

Lastly, how's your stock motor? Done a compression test lately?

Let us know.

Agreed. Be extremely wary of the advice you get on this site as of late, as it has become super-saturated with n3wbies who have a knack for giving out misleading, bad, and sometimes even completely wrong information. It used to take a couple hours, day, or even longer to get a solid reliable answer to questions, now it seems the questions is flooded in the 1st 5 minutes with "I thinks" and "I can't quite remember but it might be..." and "I think I heard once" etc.

Do not run 10psi of boost on your stocker, DO get fuel upgrades in place no matter the miniscule amount of boost you plan to run, and DO search for many hours on the several thousand posts about successful turbo projects here!

As Avenger and DJ said there is misleading information. I have asked many questions and never got solid responses. I am in no way close to having any kind of knowledge that they behold. But as DJ said it takes time to get the reliable response. I stand corrected on the whole psi thing, but the way I see it on many setups people have always said that there engine has gone at or around 10psi whether it be a hahn kit, star kit or even custom. There is no special science lab that you can do to find out how much pressure you engine will be able to hold. Just by reading here I have learned that there are alot of unexplainable and uncertaintys when you go turbo, if you are boosting on a stock engine you are putting the car at a greater risk of being damaged, but there are pre-cautions you can take to take care of the motor just read. My advice may not be completely solid but when it comes to these kind of things, everyone has had different experiences. Do the research and the reading and you make the final decisions. Good luck turbo'n your bitch though when you do it you'll like it. Just wish I had more time to tinker with mine.
