#90081, "Stuff To Buy Since I am Going Turbo"

I am buying a hahn stage 1 kit from a member of the board here. I have already started to buy a few things precautionary for my car. The things I have bought already is. Autometer Phantom, Boost Gauge, Air Fuel, and Fuel Pressure along with the 3 gauge a-pillar. I also bought a Greddy Turbo Timer for the car too. What other things should I buy as precaution? How important is the oil pressure gauge rite now at stage 1? Help is greatly appreciated thanks guys.

An electric oil pressure gauge is critical. It's just as critical at stage 1 as it is elsewhere (you do the same oil system modification).

It's basically just to warn you when you suddenly spring a leak and you don't ruin your motor + turbo.

Would I would do differently if I were to go back from what you have listed would be getting a wideband RIGHT AWAY. Yeah, it's a couple hundred, but wouldn't you rather boost happy and keep your engine from blowing up? The blinky light gauge is useless. You can blow your motor when it reads "rich".

Well I can't go back but I will consider wideband later down the road. Anything else I should get?

Sounds like that just about does it. I would definately get the oil pressure gauge though. Have you went and bought new gaskets and the little stuff like that yet?

Ditch the blinky gauge and get a Wideband, Elec. Oil press. gauge, SFMU, gst/x exhaust mani studs instead of bolts, New plugs (search for turbo plugs)

Preffered items:
EGT gauge- (I'm selling mine)
Datalogger
upgrade to stage 2
Fuel pump rewire mod
Walbro intank
MBC
supporting engine mods
built block etc.

I think a more important thing would be to Make Up Your Fucking Mind. You never seem too sure if you are going to keep your car or not, and it would be a waste to buy the turbo kit and then change your mind and sell the car anyway.

Of all the things recommended so far, I think the Walbro and SFMU should be your #1 priorities. The Accel inline pump sucks ass and the Cartech does too.

my ass.
either that, or it might have something to do with the failure rate of the Accels, the outrageous noise it makes (the Walbro is loud, but the Accel is ridiculous), or that everybody and their dog recommends the Walbro before any inline pump, much less the Accel.
Inline pumps = band aid solution. Do it right the first time, and get the Walbro in-tank.

LOL. OK. where is the failure rate of the accels documented? Ive never seen it? Ive seen posts about stockers going bad and even walbros going bad, but any pump can go bad if its at the end of its life cycle.
My accel with my Walbro is not that loud. I can't hardly hear either of them.
How is adding more fuel whether through an inline or an in tank a band-aid solution? lol.
There is a reason HRC includes it in their kit. It does its job. And well too. The walbro works also. They both do.

Lol.

quick search showed way more posts about dead accels and couldn't find any about Walbros , I even remember some people saying that they have not heard of one dying, can't remember why it was though. Can't hardly hear either of them? You must be deaf.
The stock intank pump is eventually going to be a restriction, can die at any moment (which adding an inline pump will not prevent), you will be replacing it down the road with a Walbro anyway since the Accel can only help so much, if you are fucking around with a fuel pump install might as well put the good one in and call it a day... inline pumps work, sure, but the intank Walbro is just better

Not that I don't agree with you bumpin, but I've had a walbro go bad. Add an EGT gauge to your list.

Oh yea, that a/f gauge is pretty useless. You would have been better off saving for a pocket logger. It's just going to be taking up space on your pod. Wideband all the way, not only will it save you from running too lean, but it's an awesome tool to get your car tuned for max power.

Quick search for me showed an equal number of posts about any pump dying. there are even several posts about walbros dying... ANY pump can die at anytime. Telling him to replace a part that comes stock with the stage 1 kit because there is a 0.01% chance it OR the stock pump can "die at any time" (prove it) is asinine and just plain wasteful. Any of the 3 pumps could give out at any time. That is pure randomization... any of the 3 failing will cause you problems.

Are you even turbo'ed? Have you ever even driven in a car with a Walbro AND a accel inline? It is much MUCH quieter than stock+ accel. Dont make assumptions without knowledge, it makes you look uneducated.
According to your logic, he might as well replace the S16g with a S20g or 25g since they are better and if your going to fuck around with a turbo install might as well put the good one in anyway right?
heh. might as well replace the manifold with a SS equal length mani. Right?
But giving him good advice like not wasting money on a blinky gauge or other "meaningless" tuning tools is not as pertinent. Riiiiiiight.

Well let's think, what kills fuel pumps? wear and tear, probably? what is going to have more miles (and thus wear and tear) on it? stock fuel pump, or a new walbro, or a new accel? what happens if the stock pump dies in a accel install? then your car is sidelined, even though you've got a brand spanking new accel in it. if you replace the old stock pump with a brand new walbro, I think the odds of having a pump dying on you are cut down a good bit (its called insurance).

Assumptions without knowledge? you make them all the time.

I am talking about replacing the Accel pump with just the Walbro since intank pumps are simply capable of making more power. Inline pumps only increase pressure, not flow, since you are still sucking a bunch of gas through the same shitty stock pump that is only good for a NA motor. As soon as you get your megasquirt and actually have a real engine management system and get your fuel pressures down to a reasonable level, your inline is completely superfluous, so why even bother with one in the first place? an accel + walbro on a stage 1 kit is EVEN MORE pointless. Get the walbro and sell the accel to someone like trickee.

And the same logic doesn't apply to turbos, manifolds, whatever the fuck crazy conclusion you wanted to jump to. Fuel pumps are a much simpler matter then turbos. You have a voltage-output curve and thats about it, no turbine and compressor maps and eighty different trims, turbines, compressors, wheels, ball bearing vs. journal bearing, etc... Putting a large fuel pump on a modern EFI motor is no big deal.

on the topic of blinky AF gauges, any half decent wideband has a narrowband output that will let you drive the AF gauge. Doesn't need to be as accurate as the digital readout you can get on your laptop (the one you will be using for tuning anyway), and they are easy to see at all times of day. The problem is not with the gauge, it is the signal. if you have one, keep it, it will be useful once you have a wideband.

and even though you are the type of guy who can't stand not having the last word, here's the cole's notes: either way, stock pump + inline or stock pump replacement with a walbro will both work. I like the replacement idea, trickee for some reason wants you to have both, but he's a bolt-on queen so he likes having as many parts as possible attached to his car. Get whatever you want, and it will work.

btw, my car is turbo, but fabricating half your parts takes a very long time. pics coming when I finish it.

bumpin, your opinions are very extreme and you dont seem to have an open mind. bottom line: stop being so biased. All in all, i agree with upgrading to a high output in-tank pump as opposed to using an inline pump. why? who knows. sorry i couldnt be more help. anyway, i also believe utilizing a wideband instead of your a/f gauge is the way to go. good luck!

I thank everyone for their advice, mostly bumpin's smartass remarks.. (high five buddy) I am keeping the car. I just dumped $2k on it in one fucking day so needless to say I am pretty god damn serious about keeping the car. Now as soon as I hear back from Guiness about shipping of the Stage 1 I hope to install it soon. Then maybe take the car up to Concept Illusions and have them build the engine and tune it a little bit. Keep in mind I am starting off slowly with this so I will invest in the wideband later on. And I have been a member here for quite awhile too and always read the turbo section and I never really heard much about the inline pump from hahn dieing just about how noisy it is. Which at first bothered me but then I see where people come from when they say they would much rather hear it working then not know whats going and blow the engine because I am not one who will stare at my gauges all the time while driving I could see myself getting a little annoyed with it. And if noise was a big factor I would just buy a stock fuel pump out of a Toyota Supra and do that mod. But point being, this is a starter for me I'm not trying to go all gung-ho on a stage 1 quite yet.

my opinion is extreme? thanks for agreeing on the high output in-tank pump, but trickee can't seem to fathom the basic concepts of flow and pressure, so whatever. I thought basic concepts were his strong suit, but I guess not.

Right. There's no reason for you to get all pissy since you are quite obviously wrong, lol. Everyone else notices it why can't you? Get back to me when you actually have a turbo'ed car that works, lol.
I've been turbo'ed longer than you have even been on this board n3wbie. Until you actually learn anything I would try and refrain from posting in threads that can actually cost people money or lead them in the wrong direction with their tuning and future enjoyment of the car. Damn, you are as bad as mcubed and eclipsetunerhingeguy, lol.

EDIT: Oops, n/m. I didn't realize you were Canadian. If you want me to rewrite that in simpler terms let me know. Its no problem, really. emoji

ya so I think... wait is this post about a turbo kit or another pissing contest... any who If I am not mistaken you cant run a fuel pressure gauge inside the car... fuel lines are better kept out side of the car. Also think about getting a new dp, the one from hahn for the stage one is a joke. On 30 right in egg harbor city there is a exaust shop called patersons exaust. Thats where I am getting my new dp made, 2.5 ss, madren bent, flex section, 02 bung, wideband bung, and egt bung, 220 with install. If you do go there tell them that Dean sent you and they will hook you up. Dude drives a black tsi, pretty dam fast.

You're right. But I had to press the point because I'm sick and tired of fucking n3wbies coming in and making suggestions that are unwarranted and unnecessary. There is logical reason to replace a fully functional and quite fitting piece of the kit when it works just fine. Now if the OP's stock pump had failed then sure, buy a new walbro and sell the acell, but until then.... no.

No pissing contest for me, since I know I am right.

What makes you right? What POSSIBLE advantage is there in running both pumps when just one of them would work just fine on its own? Its quieter, that's it? Is that worth $100? Plus it seems from a few posts with both pumps on DSMtuners say that with the both of them, they are no quieter.
You can't justify your view for shit, you just insist you are right. Please o please trickee, get off your high horse and google this one for me.

Works right now, I replaced the stock hose from the pump to assembly with another one that was a slightly bigger inner diameter, so it was leaking a bit. Starts right up now.
And you just completely dodged the question I posed to you, so you also just completely forfeited the argument and admitted you really don't know your shit.

Mmmhmmm. Yup. Why don't you drop it. The OP knows the deal and he knows that he's getting good shit and doesnt need to replace his pump. End of story. End of discussion. End of posting. Get it? Too hard for ya? I don't know how to write this any clearer. eh? brah?

you can run a fuel pressure guage inside the car...You need an electrical gauge with a sender (as opposed to a mechanical gauge), autometer sells a good one.

hey don't blame me, I'm trying to keep you from wasting your money.

Using both pumps is a waste of money, the Accel works, sure, but is not capable of supporting the same flow as a regular Walbro 255lph is and can't even approach a Walbro 255HP, so it becomes useless long before the Walbro does. Accel themselves only recommends their inline pump to 330hp, Bill Hahn says 450 horsepower, and 4G63 DSMers all use the Walbro and that is good enough to get them well over 500 horsepower. The Tapp Racing car put down 600whp with a Walbro 255lph intank, he later added another Walbro intank to make 723whp.

Jason_ESiT had both the pumps for awhile, and then removed the inline, and Jason > trickee.. jason did make his own 8 injector setup, and trickee can't even get his blue engine dressup paint to stick on the stuff he sprays it onto.

The whole point is, get either pump and they will work well enough. Both is a complete and total waste of money. The Walbro is quieter (that is the consensus of people who are not trickee). Installing either one is easy. The Walbro is all you will ever need to make big power, the Accel does not flow enough to take you past 450hp.

I'm the one making a real case here, trickee just says he's right and I'm wrong and does shit-all to prove it. His internet ego is at stake here, he's never going to admit he is wrong, but the least we can hope for is some kind of attempt at saying why he's right.

ahh whatever, fuck this. You come on here solely to piss people off. You can't actually discuss anything, you don't actually know anything, you just hate. You don't even research your posts to support your side of it, you just run your mouth. Sad thing is trickee, I've owned my car for about a year and a half and know five times as much about it as you do, and learn more then you do every day. Plus I understand the concept of karma and being good to people, especially when it does not affect my real life in any way (because we all know the internet does not). me > you is what I'm getting at, here.
and remember, you've proved right everything I said in an earlier post (you couldn't stand not having the last word). and its also too bad the original poster is getting the Walbro and ditching the Accel (just like I said), and that you have dodged every serious question about what advantage there is to your suggestion (admitting you don't know shit). Why do you keep going?

I'm very happy for the OP. He can buy whatever he feels like. That wasn't my point and never has been. You are too oblivious to what my point was which is fine with me too. The only reason I continue to post here is to play with your little pea-sized brain.

But, you're boring me now. I continue to respond to see if you can say anything witty but alas it does not appear to be true. You bore me. Move on little turd-burglar I guess I need to find someone more edumacated to banter with. You don't have the knack.
The only thing that slightly cracks me up is that you keep making references to me and my car when you know nothing about either, lmao. Comparing yourself to me is hilarious since you have nothing to compare it to!
Yawn. Off to find someone else to try and "help" Your boring childish insults are ended.
