when you lose by a cars length in the quarter mile about how many 1/10ths of a second do you think it matters? .3? .5? i'm trying to resolve a debate my friend and i are having. thanks!

Well, this is a rough calculation. It all depends on your speed when you cross the traps and his speed too.

Suppose you both cross the traps at 100mph, but becoz you shifted better or some reason or another, u crossed the line 0.1 sec quicker than your friend.

(100mile/hr)(1.6km/mile)(1000m/km)(1 carlength/4m)(1hr/3600sec)
= 11.1 carlengths/sec
=1.1 carlengths/0.1sec

So you would be 1.1 carlengths ahead of him.
