#89416, "Up and running again!"

Welp after a struggle with time from going to work full time and school in the evenings, the RS-T is back up and running today!

I pulled the head off and i didnt see anythign wrong with it, but hell, i went for the top end rebuild anyway...

i built the head with the following:

Port and Polish done by HorsePower freaks
new RC 510cc injectors
stainless 1mm SS valves and new seats machined for the valves
crower springs and titanium retainers
new felpro valve seals
stock cams still

started her up today and god damn did it feel great!
drove her and tuned her to 20psi and jesus lord does it pull hard as hell. looking into some slicks now for track.

but i just wanted to share the good news on a fresh top end rebuild gone perfect and maaaad boost gone very well and greatly tuned! emoji

This is a performance shop in Ohio called HorsePower freaks in the Dayton/Cinci area. They actually specialize in Honduhh's, but they said they could do my head and they did a good job for only having it for a week in a half.

So you are running 510cc injecotors controlled by the SFMU? I wondered if we could run higher than 440 with SFMU. How did you tune it and what pressures are you set at? Glad to see you got it running again.

Good to hear Mike, did the Machine shop look for problems while they were machining it? 510cc injectors????? are you kidding me, you had a hard enough time getting the 440's to work well; I think we need to sit down and re-design your fuel system buddy. Fall is here, plan to for spring so your not getting killed by Fuel prices.

My Ms is getting about 25MPG, 27 if not boosting.

I am going MS over winter, but was wanting some maad fuel for some crazy boost for the rest of the season.

Machine shop did look for everything, and they said my head was okay, so everything seems okay on it too for now atleast.

I couldnt pass up the 510's tho, brand new RC 510's for $125.

Suddenly, when idling, after about a minute or so, the car bucks, then stalls.

I check with OBDII scanner and I get something like these:

-MAP/Barrow sensor voltage too high.
-O2 Sensor Bank1 Sensor1 voltage too high.
-Manufacurer emission control auxilary malfunction

what do these three mean?

never got them before....

Well make sure all your conns are good after the head job. Map sensor code means you might need to tweak the FCD Mike if you are using the one i sent you. You can tune it by hand, just turn the adjustment to drop the voltage by 1/8 turn and you should be good. I had to adjust mine the first year and i was fine after that. )2 sensor? Not sure, initial though is bad o2, just rest the cosde and see if it comes back.

Manufacurer emission control auxilary malfunction - this code you are getting because you have a mitsu and you are scanning with a generic OBDII scanner. one of the emissions components are faulting but you will need to use the number to know which it is. Or if you use a obdII scanner that will read asian (mitsu) then it will give you the specific details on it. its kinda messed up because if you scan the code on a Talon the scanner will give you the details on it. Before i updated my scanner i used to have to read my eclipse then go plug into my Talon to get code details off the troubleshooting kart.

#89509, "MAP Codes?"
In response to Reply # 15

Jesus, why cant the car run like it did before the freaking SO...?

Anyway, so heres whats up. My idle was very loopy with the 510's obviously, and the car would idle, then suddenly, the vac would drop to about 2" and then it would just die out.

So I said fuck it, put the 440's back in. So I get off work early, put the 440's back in, and I keep getting this code for the MAP Sensor voltage too high. So im thinking my MAP is just shot for good now. My wbo2 gauge reads from below 11v to sometimes 12.8v when I should be around 14.4 or so for idling. I maybe thought my S-AFC was fucking it around, so I disconnect that, and same thing. When I lower my FP my idle reading goes up, but when I higher the FP my idle voltage goes down. When I rev the car, i shoot the usual black smoke, AFTER the rev, not during.

I no longer have the bank 1 too rich code, just the MAP voltage too high.

So whats the conclusion guys, replace the MAP sensor or what?
I can say that when I had the MAP off from re-doing the headwork, it did get wet from rain water (window was open in the garage and didnt know and the MAP was right there so it got wet), but I dont know if just water would ruin the sensor or not.

So whats the idea's here???

My fucking car ran so strong before that gosh damn puller bracket broke, I want it back to how it was before DAMNIT!

Mike before you go swapping out the map sensor take a voltmeter and she what voltage the map is outputting at the ECU. Remember the map needs to output less that 4.7v max. make sure your conns didnt get crossed ect where you spliced in the FCD. Also check to make sue your conns at the ECU for the AFC are not shorting.

Get back to me on this. I will go get a map sensor for ya but that may not sove your issue.

take it while its running so you've got pressure to read, if memory serves me right it's the yellow and black wire, at least on a 95

Try it in Acc mode. then remove the Map and blow into it to simulate positive pressure and see how high the voltage gets. If your using the map FCD i made you there shouldnt be a way that you get voltage too high code from the sensor itself. YOu can also try with it running just to see what you get at idle (obviously it should be much lower).

Also test the voltage at the ecu to make sure it is close, it wont be the same because of the Afc.

I am going to be pretty busy tonight Mike but if you want try calling after 9pm.

Terry

Okay, I tested the MAP and it seems to be okay.

I 'think' im leading towards my timing being not set right.

My intake cam is about 3/4 to 1 tooth off so my vac is only pulling in about 10-12" which obviously, is not normal.

I dont know if this would effect it, but im leading towards a simple yes.

I think yes because im guessing the ECU is thinking I might have a vac leak, therefor telling the MAP to compensate for fuel or something along this sort.

The car runs for about a good minute or two, then the motor shakes, stumbles and stalls. My only code like stated before was for the MAP Voltage too high. I even tried unwiring the S-AFC to see if that helped and nada, not a thing was different.

Its odd, because I am deff running rich, im not seeing above 12 on the wbo2 gauge.

So common sense is telling me to re-adjust the timing, get it straight and go from there and see what happens.

Now, on a side note, with AEM gears, does it really matter if they are set upwards and downwards? I know in the installation instructions, it says to the intake i think facing up and the exhuast facing down. I never did do that, simply because I forgot, But I would like to be sure of it if it really matters or not, since I will be doing the timing once again...

I tell you what though guys/gals, going to school for auto tech is really helping me diagnose problems. Its amazing what instructors and what not know about auto. Anyway, suggestions, please.

Mike the eaisest way to set your cams is to use the indexing marks under the Valvecover. Set the crank at tdc #1, you can do this without pulling it apart, just insert a 1/4 drive 8" extension into the spark plug hole and feel for the piston to be at the highest point you can get it. put a 18mm wrench on the cam bolt and "feel" the crank roll over at tdc. Now check the index holes at Perfectly perpendicular to the camshaft. Adjust your gears as needed. When set mine up the first time with a decked head i was at 12" vacuum but my intake was way off, like 6 degrees. I am willing to bet your intake is advanced way to far. You probably have a real lopey idle right now.

I located a map sensor at the junk yard today.....its on the 2.4 block i am pulling emoji

Yup, just like it says, its runs like horse ass.

Heres what I have done to fix this fucked up problem...

Re-did the timing. I did this yesterday/today. Everything is now perfect with the timing.

Checked the star FCD. I was using the star FCD and i thought maybe it was fooked up, so i unwired it from the map, wired the map all back together and started it up. It seemed to idle a titty bit better, but still kinda shitty.

I havent gotten the MAP sensor voltage too high Code again.

I now got bank 1 too lean. My wbo2 is reading under 11 which means I am actually too rich.

I got a code for cyl 2 misfire, replaced the plugs which were blacker than black spray paint.

Now, the car will run for about a good 2 minutes or so, then shake stumble and stall. Sometimes, it will catch itself, rev up real high and then idle again.

I dont nkow what the fook to try now.

Maybe the front o2 sensor, the whole MAP sensor, ECU just plain fucked up all together. I dont know. Someone point me in the right direction besides up the horses ass please emoji

I JUST WANNA BOOST AGAIN emoji

Try replacing your o2 sensor. The computer will make you run richer when it is messed up as a safety measure.

Ive done some searching for about an hour on all these sensors and I have to read that if the coolant temp sensor is bad, it usually wont even throw a code.

Its $14 from autozone so I am gonna try one. Couldnt hurt I guess.

I once had a code for it, i erased it, and it never came back. So Im gonna grab one tonight or tomrrow and see what the horse's ass decides to do on me.

The searches for "coolant sensor", one by aaron (amiller76) from last year said, if you have stalling, bucking, stutternig and rich a/f mix, replace the CTS, he had same problems it seems like and it fixed his problemo.
