As some of you know I had a piston go out that I'm replacing this weekend. When I took off my intercooler piping I noticed about the bottom 1/3 of the intercooler completely filled w/ oil, all my pipes, intake manifold, turbine, inside turbine housing, and so on... I blew my Autometer oil pressure sender (they sent me a new one) from the blowby around the blown cylinder. My breather & PCV is vented to the atmosphere at the moment, so the oil couldn't have come from anywhere other than the turbo seals, I think. I don't really know how the turbo seals seat in the turbo. Can they blow out, or would oil just leak around them? I guess what I'm trying to ask is if you think the new seals on my new turbo are still good.

I am not sure what kind o seals the GT series use but the garrets many tims use a piston ring type seal. So, if you over oil the turbo it will leak oil. Did you use the oil restrictor fitting in the oil feed?

Yes it has the oil restrictor. With the crank case pressurized it can raise the pressure of the CHRA through the oil return line.

afaik, if you overpressure the GT series they will leak past their thrust bearings, but i dunno if they can leak THAT much... i dunno

Well good news for me, here is a response to an email I sent to ATP (Advanced Tuning Products), a great company to do business with.

Joel,

It's very hard to blow the oil seals on that turbo. It's very common to blow oil past the seals and it somes like you just over pressurized and oil went past the seals. It will be fine once you put everything back together and if need be people usually insall the oil restrictor. Since you motor never put out excessively high oil pressures (for the GT28R), then you should be fine without the restrictor. Putting on on won't hurt however and will keep the net pressure to the bearing housings within range. Seems ok!

I do use the oil restrictor too btw.

i had the exact same thing going on with excessive crankcase pressure messing with the return line.

i hooked up a better crankcase evac system and its working outstanding.

we dont have a very functional pcv system on these platforms if we're boosted. the valve actually doesnt work at all when the manifolds under pressure. stock turbo cars like an rx7 have functional systems because theyre designed with it, good thing to look at.

crankcase pressure at high boost was causing me a whole lot of weird problems....

anyway, hey pm me if you want to know what i did for my pcv system, so far its working well...and i got a theory for ya on this anyway
