I'm pretty set on going with a t3/t4 turbonetics ball bearing turbo for my setup. there's just so many different trims an stuff to choose from. since i'm going with a ball bearing option i can get away with a somewhat larger trim and not suffer too much lag, correct? i'm on stock internals for now but i don't wanna hafta upgrade to a better turbo down the line. i know this's a kinda broad questions so any input is welcome.

their site makes zero sense, I'm having a tough time trying to sort out those charts. If you want to pay for a ball bearing turbo, though, why not a Garrett GT turbo? Those are the kingshit turbo at the moment. It'd be hard to go wrong with a GT3071R. those things are engineering marvels. http://www.atpturbo.com/root/maps/gt3071r.htm look how wide the compressor map is even at low boost. You could wring it out and still be making good top-end power boosting 6 or 7psi, and then when you turn up the boost later you get all the benefits of the ball bearings for faster spool, and the great design of the turbo, which gives great efficiency. its a turbo designed from the ground up to be better then the T series turbos. why not get one of those?

hmmm actually i was tryna decide between garret GT or turbonetics (w/ BB). how do turbonetics and garrett compare? i'm still pretty open to suggestions at this point.

haha and yea, i wasn't sure if it was just me or if their spec info was hard to understand. i thought it was just my lack of turbo knowledge

the GT30R has been replaced by the newer GT3071R. The website I am looking at says it spools up 1,000rpm earlier then the old GT30R, but there is a lot more involved in spooling then just the turbo itself, so I don't put too much stock in that.
The old GT30R flows well to about 500hp, so I am guessing that it is about as big as you would want to go. If it is too big, you can still get a GT25/40R from a few places, which uses a GT25 turbine with a GT40 compressor and flows to about 450hp, so you will get slightly better spool with a bit less top end power.
If you wanted to do an internally wastegated application, the GT3071R is external wastegate only. The highest flowing internally gated GT turbo is the GT3076R, which also flows to 500hp.
Personally I'd take a Garrett turbo over a Turbonetics just because Garrett is a much larger company and has more R&D into their products. Turbonetics has a lot of race proven stuff, but I still don't think that they have a product that could compare to something offerred by Garrett, especially since they are still working off of older T-series designs, which are outperformed by the new GT turbos hands down.
so what about as far as the turbine A/R? .63 .82 or 1.06?
also what's the difference between havin a 2.75" or 4" compressor inlet? just more airflow right? i'd assume you wouldn't use a 4" inlet unless you're putting the filter right on the compressor b/c otherwise piping would be difficult...

a 1.06 AR is absolutely gigantic... stick with a .82 or .63 for a 2 liter motor.

how big is the difference between a .82 and .63?
quite large... running a .82 AR on the turbine side would give you spool about equal to running a .6 AR turbine non-BB turbo (kind of... too many factors involved to say for sure)... so you probably wouldn't see boost until quite high rpm in first, but it would serve well as traction control and give you more top end power. However, our cars don't rev that far past 7,000rpm so you might as well just stick with a .63 to keep your turbine working at higher efficiency in our usable power band instead of a big surge right before you have to shift.
