My roommate and I got his pocketlogger working and I was finally able to find the error code that has been bothering me since September. Now I need to learn how to fix it..

Here is the info from the shop manual:

Code PO455 - EVAP Leak Monitor Large Leak Detected

The probable causes are:

-Fuel tank purge lines improperly sealed
-Evaporative emission ventilation solenoid failed
-PCM failed

Anyone have any experience with this type of error before?
Rather than just tearing stuff apart, I'd like to find out what specifically I am dealing with...

Thanks a lot.

I had this error code. You can cap off your evap canister or check for leaks on your hoses. It is a boost leak if it is leaking. Check the valve as well. It should only go one way. If you can blow air through both ways it is probably your leak.

Hey man, did you ever fix this problem on your 99gs? Cause mine is having that problem too. That error code P0455 after a year I got my Star turbo Stage II on my 99gs. I'm running out of option.

I'm taking it to Satan tomorrow under warranty to see whats going on. I convinced the guy that the turbo didn't cause the error....I guess I just wait and see what happens.

LAST EDITED ON 08-Nov-01 AT 10:26 PM (PST)

Jeff, I thought a frequent board visitor like yourself would have noticed we all complain about the ole 0455 (or 31) code!

I've had that thing on and off for over a year now. It seems to jump out a lot more in cooler weather. I've looked over the whole damn evap system more times than I can count and without any rhyme nor reason, that code has always been a mystery.

It effects more than just turbo'ed people, but it seems to hit us the hardest.(HRC people in particular) I have some theories on it, but my biggest one is this. After 98 or so (perhaps before that), DSM started installing EVAP solenoids in the gas tank (or area) to detect any leaks. This can cause your code to light even if your gas cap is open or slightly ajar.

This post on the DSM archives may prove even more supportive to my theory below...
http://www.dsm.org/archives/1999/01/19990121.txt/25.html

As for my theory, as you know since HRC (and not STAR) has us creating a return line in the fuel system, it sets things off kilter...slightly. Since the whole sensor/solenoid business works by using vacuum and then taking a reading from that vacuum through a solenoid, and a resulting voltage reading sent to the ecu, the ecu can take these voltage measurements similar to us hearing words. Since, in our case a return line from the fuel tank, adds a whole lot more distance for that solenoid to read vacuum and other empty space, I think that 0455 evap solenoid sensor is taking a reading that's not within the ecu parameters for a non-leaking gas tank, and thereby getting a "message" that's not making the ecu happy.

This code won't hurt performance, but until we come up with a way to disengage(or fool) this 0455 EVAP solenoid/sensor, we may be stuck with it.

Well I'm here everyday, and have been for the past almost 2 years...yet I've never come across any topics about the EVAP. Or I did, but didn't think much of it because I've never had the problem until now.

I was looking the system over, and everything seems to be in check mechanically. That would help to prove your theory that it is ecu related.

Hopefully I can get some real answers out of the tech guys at the dealer tomorrow. As long as its warrantied, why not go?
The funny thing is right after I said "check engine light", he asks "is it the EVAP code?".
So they have heard of it quite often before, meaning it is not at all boost related.

Still learning emoji isn't it great?

Well, good luck. I did the exact same thing. They hooked their own datalogger up to it, erased the code, and told me that it's probably related to not having the gas cap on tight enough.

That was it. I figure I'll deal with it myself. Better than letting satan screw around with my car. I'm always nervous letting anyone touch my car out of my sight.

There are just TOO MANY bad stories of people totally screwing your car up through malpractice or negligence. All the time, oil change places screw up people's cars by leaving an oil pan bolt or tranny bolt loose or some other ridiculous oversight.

Good luck, bro!

Well I went to the dealer this morning...

The turbo DOES void the warranty *GASP* emoji

So all they did was clear the error code and tell me that they don't know what the problem is.

And as for being nervous while they were working on the car, I made sure I was right there next to them. I was in the service department watching the tech guy start my car up and take it behind, and it looked like he was launching the car at the track... I heard the BOV sound in a damn parking lot... So I worked my way back there, yelled at them a bit, then stood right there while they looked it over. The entire place stopped working and came over to look at the engine bay. After a small session of "Whats this do?" and "what is that?", they sent me on my way home.

Though I didn't get the error worked out, I did get in a nice conversation with the parts guy, and he said if I ever need anything, to give him a call and he'll hook me up. So I guess it wasn't a complete waste of time.

Back to the drawing boards...

That conversation at the dealership sounds totally familiar. I went throught the same exact thing! On one hand, they love to refuse you warrantee work, but on the other, they love to talk cars.

What about this! Since Todd was talking about that you can swap the ECU of 97 with a 95 with no prolem. Why don't we try swaping 95 ECU in our 99 since the 95 doesn't have that gas tank pressure sensor to it. What do you guys think. Just a thought...
