#86654, "Ticking Noise after turbo install...."

I just recently finished installing my Star Stage 2 kit. Now I have a pretty loud ticking noise coming from the head area. Could it be the lifters? I just had the engine rebuilt under 3000kms ago along with the head which I put in crane springs and Eaton PT Lifter/Lash Adjusters and had the cams ground pretty aggressive. Could it be due to the fact that I changed oil from normal 5w-30 to Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w-30 after dropping the pan and tapping it for the return line?

Oil Pressure idles around 25psi on a warm engine and oil level is nearly at the max line.

Also noticed that since the rebuild my vaccuum has been pretty low, idling around 12-14 and @ 650-800rpm.

Ideas?

sounds like an exhaust leak at the manifold.. i would check there first anyways. i used to have a problem a few weeks ago with my 2nd and 3rd runner, the welds wouldnt hold. also had vacuum problem where it would sit around 12-15 and then surge like crazy. since my manifold has been fixed, no ticking and no surging.

I'm having a similar issue, I hear a fluttering noise coming from where the head meets the exhaust manifold. I even changed the gasket to a composite hopeing for a better seal. It seemed to quiet it some but not all the way, it goes away when I'm not at idle. I also have a vaccum problem at idle where it will go up to 12 and then start stalling...

Was this all corrected by fixing your exhaust manifold?

are you positive its coming from your head?

Lifters will make a ticking sound but usually it won't be too terribly loud. It could be rod bearings if its really loud like your saying. Have you dropped your pan since the install?

It's an exhaust leak. You didn't do anything to affect the head or rotating assembly. It's very common to have an exhaust leak right after a turbo install. Listen close for the general area the sound is coming from and look for black soot around that area. When you've found the black soot, you've found your leak.
