#8602, "Air Fuel Ratio Question"

I just installed a stage II HRC turbo kit with front mount. Everything sounds and looks good, the performance is GREAT!!!
BUT I also installed an air fuel ratio gauge. The gauge is reading completely LEAN when I am giving the car some gas, also lean when I take foot off petal. What can I do to prevent this??
With the turbo came the fuel system of course and shouldnt it make the air fuel ratio correct or is there some other adjusting I should do. Fuel pressure is good at 9psi im getting 110 fuel pressure. What should I do with the air fuel though? I know the car running lean can blow the engine so this is something I need to fix and QUICK!!! -thanks

Don't assume that your fuel is doing fine if you have 110 psi, that sounds ungodly to me, but I havent got my fuel pressure gauge hooked up yet.. But at those kind of pressures, you could blow a fuel hose I would think, maby not stainless steel braided line, but reg black fuel hose I dont think supports that kind of pressure. I dont know a whole lot about fuel systems, but it sounds like you might want to have the injectors tested or check the fuel filters and everything, maby a partially clogged line? If its going lean the slightest bit, if it was my car, I would let off immediately because you will cause engine detonation to occur. Expecially only being stage 2 puts you at a lot of risks if you havent rebuilt the engine and built the bottom end up. I like to totally rebuild an engine(or have it done) if its being turbo charged, that way you know that if something happens you tried your hardest to prevent it, all new gaskets, seals, rod, pistons, sensors, etc... Maby someone else thats recently installed a star kit can help you more than I can, Darkone, it seems you know this stuff inside and out, any ideas?

A little more detail please.

Do you have a blinky light A/F meter?
If so, how many lights are present? (I just want to know how many lights you are considering lean, and even if this reading is accurate)

Also, are you taking this reading at your top-end (say 5-6k rpms) at full boost?

Oh yes, 110-115 psi of fuel pressure is right on for that amount of boost with stock injectors.

I have a modified autometer gauge. It only worx at full throttle where it counts. What is the reading at full throttle, mine goes to like super rich. Plus if you running a inline setup (HRC I'm guessing has it) you should be running super rich.

I am running an Autometer A/F gauge..at full trottle its reading completely LEAN, the last red light in the lean section of the gauge. When I let off the gas completely it goes so far lean that there isnt even a light flashing!!! Then i hit gas again and it starts going to normal.

Does the gauge loop at idle or at cruise? If it does not I'm willing to bet your 02 is shot....Also running to rich can fool the 02 sensor to thinking your lean. Just some random thoughts. Good Luck!

You might expect to see a lean condition as soon as you press the gas, but after a second of WOT I would expect to see full rich. If you let your foot off the gas at speed, you'll see the gauge go lean for a couple seconds...thats normal. If you're getting 110 psi fuel at 9 psi boost, you should be fine fuel wise...unless you have clogged injectors or something. Or maybe the A/F gauge isn't hooked up right. How does the A/F gauge behave under normal driving? I would really recommend an EGT with any turbo kit. Then you could diagnose things a little better.

If you're running too lean at full throttle, turn the brass needle valve on the Fuel Pressure Regulator in (clockwise) a quarter turn at a time.

Also, how does running too rich fool the sensors into reading lean? I think I'm running horribly rich (good amount of water coming out tailpipe) and my ECU is returning a *lean* condition CEL.

It makes your o2 sensor read lean cause its failing, lol. If your running real rich, you'll go through o2 sensors like a mug, expecially if you use any leaded gas or fuel system additives. If a o2 sensor is failing, it generally reads lean when you know damn well its rich.
