#85549, "Car bogs out at 4000-4500"

My talon gets some very heavy bogging at 4000 rpm especially in second gear, i'm new to all this so what do i need to change to make it stop or least lessen it. I have an apexi safc, vortech fmu, and a FPR. My manifold is cracked so could that maybe affect the bogging? My exhaust gasses seem to be running to hot (maybe causing the manifold crack?), today even reaching the 14k range which can not be good, since it usually stays from 8-11k.

If you need to know any specs or anymore info let me know, and thanks in advance for your help.

Ps. I am getting the manifold fixed and dyno tuning done in about two weeks but i want the car to be a little more driveable and make sure im not doing any damage to it by driving it.

Also i want to add that it is split second and it has a big 16g set at 7 psi, it bogs before it can reach more than 4-5psi though.

Correct me if Im wrong, but when I had a Vortech SFMU, you didnt need an fpr. Is that different with an FMU? If not, I'd be starting there.

i bought it with the fmu and fpr installed. i was told it ran fine when it was tuned.

also the reading on my fuel pressure gauge is 33 at idle.

I was driving it yesterday and noticed when i come out of second shifting at like 3k rpm, 3rd has no power, it takes forever for the rpms to build up. The exhaust note doesnt sound right with the car either, and it blew white smoke out once or twice when i started it.

I am having similar issues with mine as well. When your car bogs do you spike to lean really quick? You are running the DSMlink right?

it seems like its spiking to lean, since when the boost starts building up is when it completely bogs out. i was going to get it tuned at a local shop but i think i'll take the 40 minute trip to hahn since they have expierence tuning our turbo 420a's.

i though stock idel fuel pressure should be around 45-50 on stock injectors? you might not be getting enough fuel.

the fmu is basically a piggy back to the stock fpr. what fpr do you have? is it a stocker or something else?

The first owner bought the FPR from Summit, on the reciept all it says is Fuel Pressure Regulator...

This weekend my buddy who has been working with turbo hondas came over and we tried jacking up the fuel pressure, changing the settings on the SAFC, and even to the extent of pulling one of the pipes off and disconnecting the turbo.

Still bogging at 4k rpm, now im left to think either if my car has some head/valve problems or if my ECU is just going nuts. After I get my new manifold in im going to get it on a dyno and see where it goes from there.

let me know the outcome because I am still trying to figure out why mine is doing this too! I am going to take off my DSMLink and check to make sure nothing is messed up there!

I just got my electrical fp gauge in the mail yesterday and I am going to hook that up this weekend and see what my fp is at WOT. I currently only have the one under the hood to adjust idle fp. This whole boggin is really starting to piss me off.

Probably about time to invest in a WB

We cant run DSMlink on our cars. Its for the 1g and 2g Turboed 4g63 motors, not the 420a... lol.

If you are reffering to the Missing Link, that is a COMPLETELY different thing, completely different...

You are going to confuse this kid even more, cuz you are starting to confuzle me even.

I do have a check engine light on and whenver the car bogs that check engine light flashes. As far as Fuel Cut Defencers goes I don't have one. My fuel system setup is below along with my whole setup!

emoji then the missing link is what your using as an FCD... FCD is fuel cut defender, it could be electronic or mechanical, as the Missing link is

no. the missing link physically prevents the MAP sensor from seeing boost. an fcd electronically prevents a positive manfold pressure signal from reaching the ecu. if you have a missing link you will not get a positive signal from the MAP which would make an fcd poinless

well rule that out then!

On the way home from work today it has gotten significantly worse, like the car is trying to stall out. I think I heard 3 small pop backfires as on my way home as well. Doesn't matter if I am just idling along in a gear with my foot off the gas or I am on it boosting...it does it at anytime. There is no specific time its doing it now, completely random now!

Plus my car stalled while I was idling at a stop light in neutral!

I am really getting fed up with this!

Okay i have an update on my situation. I've been doing a little research and went ahead and bought some new plugs and wires. My old ones where some denso iridiums that where in terrible shape and the wires had really high and really inconistant resistances. I put in some NGK BkR7e's and some MSD plug wires.

Unfortunately i cant fire it up yet because my manifold is still being made, which required me shipping my old one out...

The thing is with my motor that it doesnt seem to be a boost related problem, even with my piping unhooked it still bogged out. I was told that having a the FPR and FMU dont work well together so i am also going to try to turn up the fuel pressure all the way on the FPR and let the FMU do the job.

Alot of people where suggesting that plugs/wires/coil where my problem, well it turned out that the plugs/wires where crap and the coil's resistances are in spec. Im pretty sure nothing in my fuel set up is bad or clogged except for the fpr/fmu combo causing trouble since all my fuel stuff is new (fuel pump, steel braided lines, filter, injectors). I was also told that it might be my MAP sensor gone bad (from what i can see it is not equiped with a missing link, but would it matter if the bogging happens with or without boost?)

I will update when i get the plugs and wires in to see if maybe that fixed the problem, but im thinking its something a little more complex than that....
