take off the filter and the piping going to the inlet of the turbo and see if you can wiggle the compressor wheel... if it moves alot and is hitting the compressor housing, its fucked up.

never heard a turbo rattle, even when mine went bad and it was making my car smoke under the hood as if it was on fire.

does that mean the bearing is bad?

Nope, they will definitely rattle if the bearing is shot. The fins end up scraping against the turbo housing wall making a horrible noise. It may be the bearing and other things, but you'll have to send it out to see whether it's worth re-buidling or buying a new one. A rebuild costs about 400 (done correctly and balanced), and new 16G from Hahn cost about 630 (i think). It should cost about 50 bucks to have it looked at by a shop that deals with turbos.

Were you running a turbo timer? They *should* last longer than that.
