#84240, "turbo rebuild question"

ive got a 16g recently that has some shaft play...it has no back and forth play, just up and down...the turbo was just bought back in january so its practically brand new.... i dont think i need everything that comes with a rebuild kit, so it would be kind of a waste.... ive seen just the bearings for sale...my question is, is that all i need for up and down shaft play?..i would think so, but im not sure what the stainless steel bushing that goes on the springplate?...also is the thrust bearing just for end to end play? everything else seems fine.... let me know some input...thanks

You might want to see what happens when it has oil pressure in it, that play might suddenly go away emoji

if its really minimal...think about it. As Keith said once there is oil flowing through it will take up that space.

Install it and floor it imo :O

no, this is definitely not right....the exhaust turbine wheel is all chewed up so i switched it with the one out of my 14b...i also oiled it up before putting it back in...the shaft play is definitely not like its supposed to be...the 14b is nice and stiff, the 16g is real loose...i think the turbine wheel being chewed up probably threw it out of balance and wore the bearings out.... back to my original question...is it only the bearings that the shaft play depends on? oh, and what seals the oil from comming out of the shaft..is it the little "clip" at the end of the shaft? thanks

If your turbine is chewed up then you def. have some shaft play that you shouldn't have .... but if you just bought it in Jan. then you should contact Hahn (if that's who you got it from) b/c that turbo should have a 1 year warranty on it. I just bought a new one this past summer and it came with a warranty. Get a new one man. Like was said above, it should have some up and down shaft play though to allow the oil pass through .... and yes, I do think that the clip at the end prevents the oil from passing through.
