#82822, "FMU or SFMU"

Hi all I tryed searching this out some but didnt find much so maybe someone here can help. I have a star stage 1 kit but I am doing some heavy upgrades on account of frying 2 pistons. Im going to basicly upgrade to an fmic, forged internals,440 injectors. My big question is should I ditch the fmu that came with my turbo kit and go for a sfmu or can I add a decent fpr to the system, or is that just a stupid idea. Oh and anyone that knows what walboro comes with the star kit I think its a 255 but not sure. Any info would be good thanks.

you should definitly upgrade it to the sfmu. it has greater tuning capablity and if you are upgrading everything its worth the money.

Why not just ditch the SFMU, get a 1:1 regulator and either the 034EIC or MS and have even more control and tuning ability? Yes, it might cost a little more (MS might be cheaper actually) but in the end, you'll be happy you did.

i agree with this statement totally.

Get a MSnS for like 3-400 + 150 for an aeromotive 1:1 and you'd be set.

besides tuning the MS. emoji

If ya don't know anything about air/fuel & ignition tables it might take some learning. But learning is FUN!

Well gotta love upgrades, fuel system wise I think Im going to have to just keep the boost down to stage 1 levels for a while. Thats not that big of a deal hell it will probably take me all summer to put 5000 miles on the car to break the engine in other then that its living cheap time so I can save some more pennies. Oh and yes riding around with a laptop playing with fuel curve and injector duration sounds like a blast. Maybe Im just weird like that.

which datalogger are you using and where did you get it? i need one. also, are you talking about having a laptop with a datalogger software program installed on it? if so what program is that and does it just connect via a serial cable that adapts to the OBD2 port?

what i mean is, is there a way to use a laptop datalogger without having the MS which has a serial port on it already?

Super Fuel Management Unit.
I have the same setup this guy is asking about.
I WAS trying to use the 255lph intake fuel pump with 440 injectors and the 4:1 disk in the standard FMU. DOES NOT work! It idles for 20 seconds and floods the motor. Unless your goign to use an AFC for some serious leaning out of the idle, get the SFMU. I just bought mine from www.summitracing.com and I got my car running perfect even without the AFC. Although I am still planning on using the AFC for fine tuning the idle just a tad better, it idles fine and doesnt stall like the standard FMU did. You need something adjustable though. I was just in your boat you are in, and I didnt wanna spend a shitload yet on fuel management, so a SFMU is your answer i guess emoji

Hey mike thanks so much you answered my question exactly. I may go with a fuel management system but its nice to know I can go with just a sfmu. Like I said upgrades may come slow but they will come. Thanks again.

no prob, now lemme get some points, hehe

you might wanna get a S-AFC though too to go along with your SFMU to help lean out the idle so its damn near perfect. My idle is okay but nothign like stock without the afc.

Im not a big fan of the SAFC. it messes with your timing under boost, by lowering the MAP signal. like someone above posted, why pay 250-300 bucks for the SFMU, which allows NO tuning capabilities other than lowering the idle FP....when for the same price, or maybe even just 100 bucks more for all the "bells and whistles", you can basically have a full stand alone (megasquirt) that allows you to control any size injector you will ever need. if nothing else, i wouldnt go the SAFC route, unless you ONLY use it to lean out idle, and nothing in the upper/boosting RPM's.

Wow after someone actually put something more then ms up for megasquirt I just found enough information to keep me up tinkering for a week. First of all this looks almost too cool to be true. Open form too 'you mean to tell me someone out there is still about not getting rich doing something they use to enjoy before it became work'.

i only suggested him to the way of the afc to lean out the idle. i would not use it for anything else since it does mess with timing under boost and all that good shit. i like the megasqirt but i just didnt have the money for it, so i went the cheap route this time, and it actually worked out good for me emoji

Actually from what I have been reading and seeing out there ms will be cheaper then going with a sfmu and a afc. Im still not 100% on this but Im working on it. Is anyone using the ms unit with the add on ingition modual to control spark timing also? I know some people are on other applications just wondering about ours. Also is there an advantage as far as detonation is concerned for going with a full out ms igniton and fuel management system?

well, a SAFC is ~275 bucks....SFMU is ~275 bucks....you can get EVERYTHING for the megasquirt you need(not inclusing wideband) to control your timing and injectors, for right at 350 bucks. even if you add 300 bucks on top of that for a wideband, you're still within 100 bucks of the SAFC/SFMU setup, and a TON better....just my opinion. I'm smitten with this Megasquirt unit... emoji its the electrical engineer coming out in me, wish it were my idea!

Most likely a redundant question, but where is the best place to get a Megasquirt system?
