I found (well Rick did) the solution to the stuttering BOV! Takeout the intake pipe to the filter and just attach the filter directly on to the compressor. It worked on mine..at low boost a get just a minute flutter followed by that nice GReddy BOV whistle. I don't know what it is that makes it stutter: 1) The filter/ pipe was in the way of the BOV discharge path 2) ???!!! Try it every one, only takes 5 minutes and PLEAAAASE tell me your results thanks

I dont get a flutter from the BOV, I have the TurboXS Type H, I used to until I replaced all the vaccume lines... Must have had a slit in one.. As far as the intake pipe, I wouldnt think that would change it that much, I have a test pipe that runs all the way down to ground just about infront for the front bumper and that doesnt cause BOV flutter, just the good ol swooooosh of crazy boost... -- Brad Rickard 98 GS HRC Stage V (nuff said)

Well Raizin basically garaunteed it would work but I removed the pipe a long time ago (no choice with my piping). My STD HKS sounds the same just louder.

It's compressor surge.. not the BOV. It's the sound of the air trying to force it's way out of the turbo inlet. Might have something to do with us having such a big ass turbo (star systems). The only time I don't get that whack ass sound is when I boost over 10 pounds.

Hmmm I've NEVER had compressor surge with the supposedly inferior HKS STD BOV at any time (I know what it sounds like cause I had no BOV for the first few days until I rewelded the flange). It never flutters but it did get a little more intense (it has a reverb like a riffle and snaps a little harder at full boost than it did before I mounted the filter to the compressor. I do have a question though. How would mounting the filter to the compressor stop compressor surge? At say 10psi of boost (or whatever) the same amount of air is coming back when the throttle is closed, how does the filter location so far foward in the system have any effect on compressor surge? There's still piping, and intercooler and the compressor itself before the filter. I dont doubt that it stops the fluttering but I'm not understanding how filter location can stop your BOV from opening and releasing the would be compressor surge. Could it be valve adjustment or damage thats really causing flutter? If its compressor surge why cant it just be adjusted out with less spring tension?

Part of the problem is the filter itself. There is no such thing as a zero-loss air filter, so at high boost, inducing large volumes of air, you will create vacuum in the filter and pipe before the compressor. The dirtier (or lower quality) your filter, the higher vacuum levels become. I think part of the problem (and the reason removing the pipe works) is that vacuum, forcefully pulling air back through the compressor to equalize itself. Remove the pipe, less volume for vacuum to occupy, less surge.

Stan.. it didn't stop it.. you just can't hear it anymore. the intake tube that comes with the star kit was kinda amplifying the flutter noise which sounded like a friggin turkey gobble. when you take that tube out and put the filter right on the inlet.. you can't hear it anymore. BUT.. if you listen closely .. especially at low boost.. you can hear a tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh.. "flutter". Oh.. and just fyi.. I have my hks ssbov loosened all the way.. and still get the surge. It's because the thing is designed for higher boost applications such as the stock boost setting on a gsx which is 12-14 psi. not 5 - 7psi
