#81895, "General Questions about my 13b"

Well I got a 13b for cheap for my car and its in excellent shape. I was just wondering if anyone here has put a 13b on their car. I know this is a small turbo and slow spooling but I do plan on upgrading in the future. I am slowly buying parts/and learning all I can about my car before I do this. Another question I had was what size intercooler piping should I run? I am buying a front mount btw.

Thanks, All input would help. And I am serious I would like to get some good feedback on this, I am not stupid so dont tell me I am

They put the 13b on the 1st gen automatics from the factory. It is a smaller turbo and will actually spool very quickly. You can always upgrade it later depending on how much power you want to get. It shares the same turbine inlet flange as the 14b, 16g, 17c, 18g, and 20g turbos to name a few - so there are plenty of upgrade options.

The piping size is going to depend on a few things. If you really plan on upgrading the turbo down the line, then it may behove you to build the piping a bit larger now so you don't have to do it again - like 2.5". If you don't really think you'll be upgrading too radically, then you can go with 2 or 2.25" piping - that should be plenty.

True it is small, but this is a first time set up for me I just want something to use for now...I will probably get tired of it quick but for now I just want to buy everything up for my setup...I have a guy make me a manifold for 180 shipped, and bought the turbo for 100 and I have a few people tell me its in awesome shape: Give me some input on what else you think I will need:

13b Turbo: bought
Manifold: bought
ebay FMIC
making my own intercooler piping out of exhaust piping
Steel Braided Oil Lines (gettin all lines ran for 30 bucks)
greddy BOV
4g63 injecters (from a 2g gst for 50 bucks)
Walbro fuel pump
Vortech FMU or SFMU (input on which one maybe?)
Manual boost controller
boost gauge
a/f gauge
turbo timer

have I missed anything? emoji

Well I hope you read all the post here about the 14b/t25 setups that have gone around. I know I wish I would have gotten a T3/4, I believe it would have been much easier fit. You will be dissapointed by the 13b, it really has no umph, very similar to the t25. My 14b pulls so much harder than my old t25 setup its like night and day. As mentioned above if you want to upgrade to a 16G/evoIII or greater then they are easily found for a reasonalbe price.
Since you are going with one of these I should mention that you should get a cover/shield for your radiator or to cover the turbocharger to protect the radiator, mine melted(passenger side) after I started to go over 8psi. This was even with DEI turbo wrap.

Pipe size.
To be honest with you, I kinda wish I would have done straight up 2". The pipes fit better in our engine bay and are also a bit easier to work with. If you have plans of over 300whp then you might want to stick with the 2.25" stuff.

Fuel conrol:
Get with mr slick and get a megasquirt. I think that is your best bet for that. If you don't want to invest the time/effort in a MS then for sure go with the SFMU.

Injectors:
Those 4g ones will need resisitor pack to run with our engine, if you use MS you can just plop them in no resistor pack required.

Boost Control:
You will have to modify the wastegate actuator on the 13b for it to even come close to fitting without hitting you starter. If you don't and just 'turn' it to another position, it just holds the flapper open and you will get no to little boost.
Just make sure that you get the flapper to close all the way and the actuator not to hit the starter and the thing is not in a bind, and you will be ok. OR you could just get a external wastegate(way cooler than a internal).

Did you miss anything?
Clock the turbo, oil must drain down.(totally a bitch)
Clamps
Silicone elbows (for charge pipes)
Silicone couplers (or just a couple of feet of hose for charge pipes)
Replace your engine exhaust manifold BOLTS with STUDS. You won't regret this trust me.
Get a flex section for the DP, if you don't you will crack the DP after some time.

If you need pictures of my setup you can just email me and I'll put them on a server for you. I still have an imagestation account and there are a TON of pictures on there, just email me and I'll send you an invite to that one(you have to join stupid imagestation, but the pics are there).
