Who here has welded their dump pipe to their downpipe here? I really want to have this done, I think this is the greatest problem with the star kit. I like the sound but the soot and smell have got to go now. I just saw the newest sport compact mag and they had a turbo kit installed on a Rally Focus and it had a tial wastegate that had a it's dump pipe welded to the downpipe. It looked so simple, just a small straight pipe into the downpipe.

I talked to the dude that's going to modify my starion intercooler and he said that it may crack if it was that small though. So I'm planning on having a muffler shop weld the small pipe into the downpipe and then have them install a flex section. That should keep it from breaking but it does move all at the same time.

Does ne1 know of any shop in the bay area that this has been done at already, so I can get someone with some experience in on this. Like on a star or some other turbo car that has a similar setup like that focus. Also do I have to take off the downpipe to install the dump pipe? I rather they do it with it in the engine bay but that looks difficult, but no impossible.

The open dump tube is not a problem its a performance feature. It just needs to be re-routed from out the engine bay. I havent done it and wont until inspection time rolls around but it should be welded in as far down on the downpipe as possible. I dont see why they would need to take the downpipe off to weld in the dump tube (even so they can do it at the shop. downpipe wont take them but a minute to remove). Seems they might have to take off the dump tube and weld/feed the piping down some and at a different angle so they have room to work with. But if you dont want the smell and a clean engine just have it exit towards the rear or side (like the 2G in the last SSC issue). From a performance standpoint you really dont want to weld it into the downpipe at all, unfortunately the only way to garauntee passed inspection is to have it welded in before the cat. Your in CA so you wont pass anyway. With that said you can keep the sound and not get the soot by simply rerouting the dump.
BTW you really like that God awful farting sound, glad I cant hear mine over the other noises.
