Hey, will running extremely rich make EGT's rise just like running too lean will do? My EGT is on the way to my door as we speak, I should put it as high on the downpipe as I can, shouldnt I, to get the best readings? I just ran a couple low boost(18psi) runs, setup the calmap to record some different functions. Its dark out but I still managed a 174mph topspeed run on the way back, damn i wish I had a 6 speed tranny and some bigger balls. Pulled in the garage, popped the hood with the lights off and the manifold and exhaust side of the turbo were lit up like red lights on a christmas tree! Ouch Hopefully when I get the DFI tweaked out, it'll not run so rich... I can run 25-28psi on race gas and the A/F gauge is as far rich as it can go, even under full boost. -- Brad Rickard 98 GS HRC Stage V (nuff said)

Glowing manifold doesn't mean your running rich or lean, its normal after running hard at your boost levels (I have never seen that at a measely 10psi). You should have had a EGT long ago. Pitty you have all that shit and have no idea if your on the verge of blowing it up. AF gauge nearly worthless without an EGT for tuning. I guess if its pegged at full rich it can tell you your not lean but as you presumed grossly rich will raise you EGTs too! I'd set that shit back to 8psi until I got one.

That's what I'll do, the EGT will be here any day.... I had just never looked under my hood at night after a few boost runs... Damn, engines really produce some major heat, huh? I'll let you know what my egt's are when I get the gauge set up.

yeah, get the gauges... i had the EGT before the turbo... just wasnt hooked up... also, get the probe in the MANIFOLD! you cant trust the "add 200 degrees to the reading and stick it in the downpipe" method.

Depending on his tire size it could be possible. I know that my car doesn't want to go past 5000 rpms in 5th gear. I am at the same speed in 4th at 7000rpms and 5th at 5000rpms and it won't go any faster. I end up topping out around 125 or so.

I did the math a long time ago on our top speed, which is how I came up with 162. Thank you for your program though. It reenforces what I stated earlier. We are gear limited to 162. Only way to beat that is to raise the rev limit. If you have discovered a way to do this, please enlighten me.
Oh, I have seen 150 personally. And Armond is right, if you plan on pushing your car that hard it is time to spend some time on a dyno tuning it properly. The gauge will not be enough to save it.

you need to set up an appointment to get your car fully dataloged with a wide band o2 sensor on a dyno before anything else. that is much more important than an egt if you are going to stretch it out like that.

Murix, I don't know about 162 because I have burried past the 170 mark on more than one occasion, expecially one time when the cops were in chase mode. Does having 18's change anything? Bigger rims = less rotation = faster topspeed doesnt it? Just like little ghetto 13'' rims would top out at a lot less than 18's? I dunno if this is correct, but it sounds good
Anyway, I'll have my probe welded into the manifold I guess, I just dont want to fxck up my manifold... BTW, my manifold cracked about 1 inch on a weld spot, I thought it was a scratch in the ceramic coating, but I started the car up and low and behold, exhaust is blowing through it... Bummer huh?

All spedometers are off a hair from the factory and bigger rims tires etc. WILL change speedo etc...Just hope you dont wreck going that fast...I totaled my Z going 130...well techincally I slowed down to like 80 before I lost it...but still..it's no fun.

well.. the speedometer is pretty inaccurate at those speeds. the size of your rims shouldnt matter if you adjusted properly with the tire size.. since you can match the exact size needed, the most you should be off with different rims is like 1 0r 2 mph. i was going "47" on my speedo, passed a speedcheck sign (the ones that tell you your speed) and it read "44". 3 mph off at low speeds, at high im sure it could be way off.

The speedometer can be off a lot at the top end. It is inaccurate. On a dyno you would bwe able tos ee how much it is actually off by which is how I tried to somewhat correct mine for accuracy. Where it can be accurate to 1mph at 50, it can be off by 10mph at 160. A different size wheel/tire combo that affects the overall size is like changing your gearing, but not to that great of an extent unless you diod some really crazy combo. Our cars with the stock tire size and stock gearing could hit 175, but at 8000rpm which no one has managed to raise our rev limit to yet. 162-165 is the most I would imagine we can actually see short of swapping ot the 3.55 gears or raising the rev limit.
