#79029, "Can I change the diameter of the exhaust side of my wastegate?"
I am installing a kit I put together and Im all done except for right now Im doing the downpipe. Ive installed a 38mm Tial wastegate and the exhaust side of the WG is really close to the DP. It would be a real bitch to try to run, what is it like an 1"3/8, piping from the WG flange either straight down or weld it into the DP. So what I really need to know is, could I run like an inch piping from the WG without it degrading any hp or function of any parts?

The answer is - it depends. The reason for getting a bigger or even external wg is so that excess exhaust can be vented, so that soo much boost doesn't build up. It depends on what turbo you have, and what boost you're running, and what exhaust you have. The 38 may work just fine with it hooked up to a 1" pipe. As long as boost control is solid you shouldn't worry about it. If you start to creep then NO its not a good thing- get a bigger dump on that WG. The only concrete answer to your question is to run it and find out for sure....as long as you realize that you may have to take it back into the garage and tweak the WG dump a bit - you'll be allright. But seriously, only you can answer that qestion for sure.

Another aspect to keep in mind. the shorted the dump is going into the dp is better for flow but worse on expansion. As both pipes expand you will put more stress on a shorter pipe because there is less material to heat and flex. I personally had a problem going straight into the DP, kept getting cracks. I eventually re-designed my dump so it entered the DP farther down and went to a 3". No problems so far.

Oh, thanx for telling me you had this prob. I actually got a piece to fit after 2 hrs of fab but its like 5 inches from where the DP starts. Well I guess I will see about bringing down a good bit.

On my downpipe, it goes straight from the wastegate to the downpipe... Maybe about 4" of travel, and never had an issue with cracking.
Possibly different material, although I doubt it. Mine is made of 304 stainless.
