#78138, "Can i use Hasting Rings or JE rings on my pistons?"
Oct-13-04 08:53 PM by freddy_00_69

I have the howell rebuild with JE 8.6:1 compression pistons, i need rings, but i am not sure if they will fit since most people have 8.8:1 compression. I called modern performance and asked and he gave me some answer that the 8.6:1 are .20 over and when i ordered through howell i got the standard ones, so i dont know. I had total seal, but am going with je or hastings. I have the standard, not .20 over. This may be a dumb question, but i dont know to much about internals. Thanks in advance.

you need rings that will fit the piston and bore. so if you got standard bore. you need rings for standard bore.

Does it matter if it is 8.6:1 or 8.8:1? I didnt think so but the guy at modern performance was telling me wrong information then. Thanks for the reply.

The compression ratio is unimportant. You just have to buy the right size rings. If you bought standard bore pistons, you need standard bore rings. Most people buy forged pistons in a slightly larger size (0.020 over), so they can re-bore the cylinders to be perfect.

Just a tip- the "8.6:1" and "8.8:1" used to be the exact same piston and part number over at JE.

Now Howell claims this is their 8.6:1 turbo piston for 2gnt's:http://www.howellautomotive.com/Howell/Store/catalog/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=142_38_84&products_id=1339

Which is a DOMED piston "custom made especially for neons". emoji

At any rate, don't worry about the 8.6/8.8 thing, just make sure you get the rings that are either std or .020 overbore. Call JE if you have ANY questions... they can almost always match up a part number to the right ringset.

If howell tries to sell you Totalseals, tell them to shove it, and buy Hastings or JE.
