#7807, "oil return line from turbo question"

I have a question regarding the oil return line from turbo.

With the STAR and HRC kit, it comes with a hard line with a flange that you drill three holes into the oil pan and bolt it up to it (with a gasket).

I'm wondering instead of doing this, could I just drill one hole and use a bulkhead fitting connected to a nice shiny SS line for the return line??

You probably could, but the return lins from the trubo is pretty big. I'd say about 1/2" to 3/4" in diamater. I figure it need that big of a line to let the oil move quickly back into the pan.

Yes...that'll be no problem. It's about 1/2" HOSE which means a -8 SS line...

THAT is how the HRC kit IS. In fact, we only use the ONE bulkhead fitting (through one hole) and NOT three (for the fitting and the bolt screws) as does the STAR kit...I guess.

instead of welding, you could use the threaded bulkhead fitting and nut and put some JB weld around the hole before you tighten things down. man that stuff is serious. i love it. of course you'll probably never be able to take the fitting out without wrecking the damn thing, but who cares?

So there should be no problems using a threaded bulkhead fitting with jb weld instead of drilling three holes and bolting a flange to the oil pan?

Reason why I ask is that my car is totaled and I am stripping all my aftermarket stuff off, and if I can do the return line with a bulkhead fitting instead, then that would save me the trouble of dropping the oil pan down in my wreck.

well, you'll still have to drop the pan to put the bulkhead fitting nut on. it goes on from the inside.

Yeah I know! But I'm trying to avoid dropping the pan in my totalled car...cause it'll get messy as the oil pan is all mashed up. emoji

actually the HRC stage 2 as far as i am concerned has a RUBBER hose as the return oil line into the oil pan. The only flexible stainless steel line is the sending line from the block to the turbo.

There is a big hose barb on the oil pan that the oil return hose clamps to. Same for the return oil fitting on the turbo.

All I can say, hose barbs suck! I've been through so many hose barbs from installing the turbo, I'm never gonna use hose barbs ever again! Pay the extra money and use SS lines with AN fittings! WOOOOO
