#7610, "Looking for used Hahn or Star kit"

I have a '96 Talon Esi and am looking for a stage I or II (basics, right?) complete turbo kit. Hoping for a reduced price since I'd be getting it used. How much could I hope for with a limit of....$800? I'd say $1k would be my top. I'll already have intake, exhaust, and headers.

LAST EDITED ON 19-Jul-01 AT 07:32 AM (PST)

I'd keep saving! The turbo kits don't lose very much value even being used. You might be able to get a stage 1, if your lucky, but I dought it. Since they go for 1900 & 2900 new. I paied 2700 for my star stage II BB(used).
So if you really want one just keep saving!
You will no longer be able to use you intake and header once you put on the turbo kit. So maybe sell them to get some extra money for your turbo fund.

You might be able to find one for about $1700-$1800 for a stage one. They are hard to find used. Usually they come from people who have blown their engines and need cash to rebuild. Just keep saving and you will have enough eventually. It took me a couple months before I got my turbo.

Under $1000 eh..

There should be a manifold kit coming out soon from us ASOG guys that will allow you to use either a garret or mitsu turbo.. the rest of the parts are easy to get..

If you got the brains to do it yourself.. you have the potential to save a lot of cash.

I actually wouldn't mind getting a "backyard" kit.....where'd I'd get all used turbo parts...even maybe a used stock Mitsu turbo. Someone said I'd end up paying more than a starter kit because I'd need more pieces to go from rs/gs to turbo. I also need an average life/milage expectancy of certain parts...like how long a well maintained turbo could last, or intercooler, etc. What does this manifold kit come with or do really? How much might it cost?

A downpipe is no more than ordering a garrett flange (From RRE, XS engineering or Turbonetics ect.) and taking your car to a muffler shop. I dont think its hard to make a turbo kit once you've installed/become familiar with the components but I dont think you'll save a hella lot unless you use used parts cause new here are just a few parts:

new prices:
Manifold $400
Star equivalent T3/T4E $700 ($600 plane jane 16G and more than both for S16G with 10cm housing/hahn 16G)
Deltagate $175 (if your gonna use a T3/T4)
Vortech FMU $150
Garett turbine flange for downpipe $30 ($25 mitsu)
Garret oil feed line $20 ($50 mitsu)
HKS STD BOV $70 + $30 for flange= $100

Now you've just spent $1275 (thats the cheapest route $400 manifold, $600 turbo assumming internal wastegate, $150FMU, $25 oil feed line and $100 BOV kit) on new parts and have yet to fabricate one intake pipe or downpipe. Dont have a oil drain line or oil fitting for the oil pan. not one piece of silicon, vacuum lines, pipe couplers or clamps. no fuel pump, no guages, no filter, no VC1 for OBDII. The only way I see you being able to make this cheaper than a kit is if you are a pipe bender and welder or can have that done for next to nothing. Then you could probably finish up for another $300-400 bucks for a grand total of $1600-1700. If someone else has to farbicate the piping, supply the small pieces and install it forget about it. Not to mention the several wks if not more of downtime sorting out the parts needed as you go along.

Now used you can take $300-400 off the turbo price alone and do things a little cheaper if you know how. me for one dont feel confortable buying junkyard turbo's. The turbo is the one place I wouldn't be trying to save $$, especially if trying to get one best suited for my application.

Kits are $2000-2200 without the headache or downtime

Since I cant use photopoint IMAGINE THIS:
Star turbo with E-trim and HKS BOV
Starion FMIC/2.5" piping
Joe P MBC
Apexi SuperAFC
Ross Pistons/total seal rings
Ported and matched intake manifold
AFX 55mm TB, FMM and UDP
2.5" downpipe back exh/Hayame muffler
Crane wires/Denso Iridium plugs
Centerforce DF clutch
KYB AGX struts/ST springs, UPR FSB, F&R camber kits
17" ADR lightnings/toyo FZ4 215/45/17
97' eclipse front end/projectors
Autometer gauges
Panasonic head unit/ Sony X-over
MB Quarts all around/JL stealth sub
Hifonics/MTX Thunder amps
XX brand alarm/Varad hyper green led

guys, guys, guys....

I've done all this adding up before in the SAME quest to get the "cheap-ass" bargain basement backyard turbo. It just doesn't add up to much of a savings.

Again as Stan said... (for FUN, I'll go REALLY, REALLY cheap)
turbo $800
cheap manifold $300
cheap Wastegate $150 (if you go internal wastegate, expect the turbo to cost more)
cheap downpipe $100
cheap Intercooler piping $200 (with NO INTERCOOLER)
cheap fuel pump $100
cheap FPR $250
Fuel lines $100
cheap Various fittings $75
Cheap BOV $50

Around $2000!!!! (what a surprise!) And if you save money on the turbo....wonderful. Lessen it by that much.

TRUST ME...the headaches ALONE are worth getting a pre-assembled kit. Trying to find all the oil line shit and the fuel system is BEYOND saying it would be a mere "pain in the ass."

And what do you get in the end...A CHEAP turbosystem without any instructions, warranty or tech support for almost $2000. Wow....way to go!!!!
