Hey,

I don't understand what the high octane fuels do to allow you to achieve higher boost levels? I run 93 octane on a normal basis, but race on turbo blue which i'm not sure what the octane level is on that.... So the higher the octane, the smoother the burn? Higher the octane, less likelyhood of knocking? I'm confused! Can anyone help me out?

Octane is the resistance to knock rating of gasoline. The higher the number the slower it burns. If your fuel system and internals are capable higher octane will allow you to increase boost without detonation. If your car isn't knocking and/or timing isn't being retarded due to knock race gas isn't helping unless you raise the boost past the knock threshold of 93 octane. According to Corky Bells book each 3 points in octane should allow an additional 2psi of boost (with correct A/F ratios). So if the max you can run is 8psi without knock on 93 at 105 octane you could theoretically run 16lbs without knock (again with correct A/F ratio).

wow, thanks very much, that is really helpful... how do you know if your engines knocking and to what boost level you should safely run at on 93 octane? I have always ran upto 15psi on 93 octane and 28lbs on race gas. So, can you boost to your turbos full potential on any octane, but engine knock and detonation will occur? So, this probably explains why I have cracked spark plug electrodes in the past, boosted too high on cheap gas?
