i can get "seized" turbos for pretty much free. what all would need to be replaced when rebuilding a turbo. is it something i can do in my garage or would it have to be sent out somewhere. a list of parts would be nice. thanks

about how much does that run? would it be more cost effective to buy a fuckered up turbo and rebuild it or just buy a new one. i dont want to buy a turbo that has been used on someone elses car, i want all the internals to be brand new. and as far as shipping it to a shop, is that the only way. im pretty mechanically inclined, and i have rebuilt a few superchargers back in my g60 vw corrado days. im just trying to figure out my best options, bc ive seen 16g rebuild kits on ebay for under 100 bucks. thanks

The main issue with rebuilding a turbo is having it balanced. If you can balance it, then great, most people don't have the capability at their personal home/shop. It's a general consensus that it's best to send them out. As far as cost goes, it depends what is wrong with it and why it needs to be rebuilt. A rebuild kit and can pruchased for 100 to 150. Cost to rebuild and balance is usually 75-100 and you have to figure money to ship back at forth. Generally speaking, a rebuild is roughly 300. If a shaft is out of spec or something like that and needs to be replaced you looking at even more money; upwards of 400-500. A new 16G from hahn can be purchased for 649. So, the answer to question is: depends. That is depends on what is wrong with it exactly and that can usually only be told by a professional shop.

If a turbo was seized...I'd suggest sending it to be professionally rebuilt and balanced. If a turbo was just old and you wanted to freshen it up, I'd rebuild it.
