#75278, "Info.. Some runs at the track..."
Aug-19-04 03:54 PM by siueclipse

Well.. so my first time of the year at the track with the car.

I was boosting at 21lbs.. running slicks, launching at 6500rpm with no tracktion issues.

After all the work we had just done.. new fluidyne radiator, cams, neon tranny, slicks, (msd ignition and hrc's new dp and fuel system didn't show up in time)..

Guess what happens?

The clutch doesn't hold after the 3rd run (just when I had enough confidence to run hard on a new tranny and slicks). I ended up running a 14.9 with the clutch not holding in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gear. Basically I was about 25% throttle.

Crazy eh?

At least on the way back from Indy, the clutch was holding and I race about 10 cars. None of which could keep up on the highway.

Also, Ill have that dyno video for everyone I think by tomorrow night.

Peace.

Holy crap..6500 rpm launches? lol not surprised the clutch wasn't holding that emoji I assume you run the 4 puck ceramic disk? Ceramic likes heat to grab, but when it over heats, it slips like hell..Even though you were on slicks, i'd try a lower rpm launch..like 4000-4500, and "slower" clutch dump. Since you said it was fine on the highway, then its that intense amount of heat at the launch that made it slip..mine will do the same thing at 15 psi..its fine on the highway, but slips at the track..sucks..

well its a clutchmasters stage 3... i started launching from 3k, to 4.5k then to 6.5k. it slipped the entire time.

she launched hard for the first couple seconds.. front of the car felt like it was going to come off the ground.

oh well. im going to try and find a better clutch. we even looked around the vendor tents to find a good clutch and were considering changing it in the pits. no luck finding one of course.

If you really want to rape the launch, the only option at this point, is the twin-disk clutch setup from Clutchmasters...1500 bucks..ouch.. It will be all the clutch you will ever need though emoji

Hmm wonder what the differences from street to race trim is..disk material? Pressure plate load? I remember asking Bill about the twin disk at the shootout, and he says its not exactly the best for streetability..although, I was unaware of the street/race trims too..so not sure what he runs in the RS..

What did your other numbers look like in the run? 60ft, 1/8th mile, 1/8th mph, and 1/4 mile mph? Also how did your other runs at lower RPMs do before the clutch started slipping?

dont have the time slips on me. all of them were around 15 seconds. on the first runs, i wasn't getting on it full throttle because i didn't know what to expect.

the clutch was slipping pretty much the entire day.

James, This is why I told you back in your Tooners days that the stage 3 would not hold up for you... You need at least a CM stage 4 in there... Can't wait to see what the car will do with a good clutch though...

anyone want my rusty lookin old stocker? ill sell it for less than the twin disk..... HAHAHAHAH.

Having Problems? Heres my Three step solution to anything 2gnt related.
Step 1: Put down everything in your hands.
Step 2: Grab a lucky strike, Smoke it.
Step 3: Walk to the fridge, double fist some keystone ice, sit down in the shade, drink one beer, finish cigarette, drink other beer, roll a joint, smoke it, walk back to your problem, and in about 5 minutes the solution will come to you.
If not. Go here: here

If still nothing, your trying to hard. Start over at step 1.

I run the CM stage 4. It's a great clutch and will hold all the torque you're making and much much more. Twin disk clutches are cool.

Im gonna run a Spec stage IV Clutch. A carbon on carbon clutch sounds cool though. I think the Exedy clutch for the Evos uses this? Heard good things about it; ie the hotter it gets , the better it works.

How tall is the tire? Keep in mind a slicks height will effect the clutches ability to grab... I have been able to use the CM stage 4 and a 24" tall tire just fine. You may not need to make the jump to the twin and sacrifice the drivability.

"Hmm wonder what the differences from street to race trim is..disk material? Pressure plate load?"

^^^ the difference here is usuallay a heat treating process and a change in clamp load buy rotating the pressure plate on the sprung hub assembly.

Hmm interesting...Check this out..not 100% sure on this "rumor", but ACT is in the works for a couple of series of clutches for our cars..supposedly a modular, and non modular, with custom high clamp pressure plate...Being released in about a month so they say..

Matt, I heard the same rumor when I was rebuilding the trans after my CFDF blew up. That was 1.5 years ago ... take it with a grain of salt but it may be a while before ACT actually releases it.

Just wondering if you did the clutch restrictor removal mod. From what I read it should give you better performance and make the clutch engage better. And whens your site gonna be back up?

what was your mph on some of your runs also you 60 ft time? the trans shop recommended a centerforce for me rather the cm and on this site everyone says no centerforce. well ib be damn if it aint 3 weeks after the rebuild i blow my centerforce at the track what a bummer. i had a feeling i should have forked out the extra money then. i think a spec stage 4 will do pretty well hopefully. but i cant hardly fork out 800 for a cm stage 4 let alone 1500 whooo!!!!!

Centerforce are junk... maybe fine if you arent running much power... but once you get crazy in the power department it's game over!

I got my 6 puck setup for like $300. Holding just fine for me... emoji

Post the time slip. I'll host it from my ftp if you need. 118 is an 11.80-12.00 et trap even on slicks thats quite an accomplishment.

ok, i couldn't find the exact time slip. i found one close, but the time slip was for a 14.9 and i can't find that one. i have others but these were from when i was first launching on the slicks so the times are as good.

R/T - .113 - terrible, but i did get .035 on another
60' - 2.702
330 - 6.877
1/8 - 10.069 - ive run 9.00 in the 1/8 here locally
mph - 77.98
1000 - 12.73
1/4 - 15.034
MPH - 99.89

i wish i could find the other time slip. i might be wrong on the 118mph.. but.. i know there was a 1 and a 8 in the mph... so maybe its 108.. certainly not 180... so either 108 or 118 at 14.9 1/4.

James

maybe there are differences in trees or time tracking.

Some tracks run .000 trees and others run .500 trees.

108 is certainly more believable than 118. I usually trap 108-110, which is a 12 second trap if we had a transfer case emoji I have a ton of buddies trapping 118 but they all run 11.60-11.90s on a regular basis.

400whp or bust.
