#7381, "what kit is faster and quicker hrc or star?"

i'm compairing the stage 2 kits of both hrc and star
i'm kinda leading towards hrc even though its more expensive, my reasoning: hrc produces 275 hp while star is 234 hp, plus we got bill hahn on this board posting which give me a funny warm feeling inside (i feel as if the buyer actually matters!!)

now my questions are these:
-am i correct in assuming the hrc is faster then star or does star have faster spooling time or something? can you give stock track times?
-what is the difference b/n the two turbos?
-what is better for fun daily driving and dependability?
-how much low end torque do each produce?
-is one more difficult to install then the other?
-any more comments to influence my decision that anyone else can think of?

thanks in advance everyone

One tip: Never, ever, ever ask this question.. It's like religion and politics all rolled into one. That's one nasty can of worms.

Search the archives and see the kind of muck that has been thrown back and forth between the two sides of this debate and you'll get an idea... as well as the information to make your decision without bringing this topic back up..

All rookies learn the hard way..........Dont ask this question it been played out.........but uuuuu i think there should be a side by side comparison posted SOMEWHERE. NER vs.HRC vs. Star although i think NER is replacing the star kit...... But man i know how it feels not knowing much about the kits.........at one time i didnt........so research all 3....it a lot of fun and a good time waster at work.......... start off with hrchahnracecraft.com then on to Turbogs.com now you have a starting point

Oh, let me have some fun here! The fellow's question is "which is quicker and faster?" I believe I have his answer (facts is facts):

We have run 11.53 @ 123 in a complete street RS (AC, PS, full interior) with an HRC Stage V.

Len Ayala's Neon has run 9.88 @ 148 with an HRC Stage V and a 100HP nitrous shot.

Both cars are being campaigned and improved intensely as we speak, so these numbers will continue to improve.

At the flywheel is just what it says presumed measured on an engine dynometer. At the wheels it measured on a chasis dyno. Presumably anywhere from 10-20+% is lost from the flywheel by the time it gets to the wheels. From all the dyno's I've looked at on our car the driveline loss is about 18%

And Bill have fun but he did ask about stage 2. We already know who's our daddy above that (especially since there is no star stage 3+).

hehehe.. well, i'm still leaning significantly towards hrc but i still got to a. sell my car, b. find an nt eclipse, and finally c. raise significant funds to buy a turbo. so i'm sure i have some spare time to do some archive searching. hopefully i'll be a member of the nt-t elite before fall emoji thanks guys.

one more question though.... do i have to tell insurence companies about my lil insignificant upgrade? emoji

Well, if you want to be a$$-raped by you insurrance company, just go ahead, write a list of all the mods, and fax it to him.... J/K dont do that.... very bad... Allstate wanted almost 400 a month to insure my car with everything covered, so I opted to have it classified as a stock GS and I pay 114 a month for full coverage with a 100 dollar deductable.... Just know that if you total your car, your getting what is covered, nothing more... And only be cool and talk to your insurrace and compare costs if you know the guy pretty well, well... very well... they can dick you over if they have that kind of info and want to...

#7399, "RE: what kit is faster and quicker hrc or star?"
In response to Reply # 0

You can get most of this info by going to wyatts or HRCs site but I'll try to answer some.

-am i correct in assuming the hrc is faster then star or does star have faster spooling time or something? can you give stock track times?
-what is the difference b/n the two turbos?
HRC uses a Mitsubishi turbo that spools faster than the STAR Turbonetics turbo. The Star turbo is a Turbonetic Hybrid Turbo and it has higher potential for horsepower than the mitsu one, though I think you can get different size turbos and features from HRC or STAR.

-what is better for fun daily driving and dependability?
Beats me, my car sure is fun to drive on the freeway or on the track, then again more boost= More gas be prepared to pay for it. Both kits are streetable.

-how much low end torque do each produce?
Well the low end torque is probably higher for the HRC because it can spool faster, don't know if the T3/T04E BB turbo spools faster though. At lower RPMs (0-2k) you have like no boost at all so it'll act as if you didn't have one. The size of your exhuast piping matters also, I notice Randy's turbo spools faster because he has a 2.5" exhuast system compared to mine.

-is one more difficult to install then the other?
I'll say this the STAR has some shitty instructions. They should be about the same difficulty to install, it's all the same stuff. As for HRC I heard their instructions are pretty good, perhaps someone can help you on the HRC part don't know much there.

-any more comments to influence my decision that anyone else can think of?
Well I bought my Star Kit because I got in on one of Wyatt's group buys, so try to find some way to get your kit cheaper if you can, so you can spend the extra money on gauges, exhuast, etc...

Heh if you got time, wait for the New Edge Racing kit, from what I see so far that kit is the shit! emoji But the other two kits are good also.

Haha hope I didn't take sides, I'm just saying stuff on my personal experiences with the star kit. I've heard that the STAR has potential for more horsepower than the HRC, I've never seen a HRC in person though....
