#73608, "My EGT's are pissing me off!"

Everytime I drive my car I get the tension in the cns. My problem is I either have to floor it or when trying to accelerate moderatly my egts climb way on up there. Pretty much, my problem is closed loop boosting. I thought that if I had enough fuel at wot, that I would have enough while cruising.

Example: when I'm on the interstate running around 70-75, if I wanna accelerate, I just give it a little gas and try to mantain my speed. Well, my egts go up way really fast cause I'm not in open loop. If I floor it, I'm ok but then I'm going faster than I want and this really pisses me off. So pretty much any acceleration in closed loop make my shit hot. What do you guy's suggest I do?

Another thing, I think that being ATX is part of the problem, because my car shifts to soon to really let the engine do the work and just relies on the turbo even when I'm just cruising. I'm running like 103-104 a/f at WOT so I know I have enough fuel when I'm trying to move, but I can't figure out the normal driving thing.

Well your EGT's climb naturally on an na car when you are on the highway. I have an M/T and when I am crusing at that speed, and need to lightly accelerate my egt's will climb up into the 1500's and sometimes higher if I'm on a hill. Stock these cars are used to seeing 1500+ EGT's. I don't know your fuel system so there could still be a problem I guess, but the EGT going up fast when you are at high RPM's is somewhat normal...

It's not the speed I'm worried about, it's the temp. It just gets to high. I either have to floor it, or accelerate slower than any other car on the road. I'm just guessing that I'm running lean at part throttle. What are my option to fix this? I have plenty of feul at WOT and at idle. Just not much in between.

Dirty, I've noticed the same way with the atx and the egts. Try dropping to 3rd with the OD off, that richens things up. Experiment and tell me what you notice. For example, my a/f sometimes are cycling, I drop to 3rd (od off), my a/f go up, and the egt's drop. I do this when I accelerate at 75-80 slowly.

That's doesn't really fix the problem that we both noticed, but other than that, I think the problem maybe our computers and a standalone may be in order. To fix that. emoji

I think this is pretty normal. My car hits 1450-1500 degrees just crusing on the highway at 75-80 mph. if im going up a hill, over 1600 degrees in partial throttle.

doh wth did my reply go?

oh well here we go again.
I noticed that too when I was auto. usually from 65-70ish. When it would happen I would push the throttle down enough to kick me into open loop w/o spooling the turbo. This would richen things up and cool it down. Once I was ok I would just let off to save gas.

Another thing I noticed that after 80-90+ this did not apply. It would run rich and egts would be stable.

Aren't those temps a bit high for stock internals? I don't let mine get over 1550. I think that temp is pretty high too.

Oh, and baldy, I have S-FMU, missing link, 30lb. Inj, and stock cams. If my sig would ever work, you could see my egt probe is between cylinders 2-3 just before the turbo. Maybe that manifold your working on will help. emoji

Well, thanx folks! I don't feel so paranoid now. It still sux though.

What A:F ratio are you talking about 103-104?

10.3:1 or 1.03v on your o2 guage.
Either way you sound very rich. You rhigh EGT temps could be the result of aftferburn.

With 30lb/hr injectors and cruising out of boost I'd bet you have enough fuel, and I'm guessing too much.

The main problem is the stock computer. It's programmed to target exactly 14.7 in closed loop, and it's damn good at it. It was never intended to see boost and there really is NO WAY around this closed loop lean condition. A solution would be to trick the ECU into open loop at 0 or maybe even 3-4 psi but I haven't seen anyone doing that. The ATX only makes this problem worse.

Can a standalone fix this? Maybe an AEM or Greddy ems?

I thought the ECU would go into open loop when the throttle was at 80% or more and or when the MAP = atmospheric pressure.

Not really. Open loop on our ECU is *mostly* determined by TPS voltage, not by Map sensor voltage. I can keep closed loop part throttle in boost all i want, as long as I dont floor it. If we can make a device to send 4.5-5 volts to the TPS at 0 psi, then we could have all the fuel control we wanted, deeming we had the appropriate fuel setup. I know ner worked on a device like this, but I think he had probs with it for some reason. Even still, my EGT's dont ever seem to go above 1500 when boosting closed loop though..

Maybe it was the timing I am thinking about. At part throttle I see my timing around 25 to 35 degrees advance, then when the map sees atmosphere the timing drops to 17 degrees advance no matter what throttle position. I guess I wish the ecu would go into open loop when boost hits regardless of throttle.

I may have to put that electrical engineering degree to use and design something like ner's gadget.
