does detonation only happen when your running lean, or could it happen if your running rich as well?
heres the situation... i'm on the hwy in 5th gear at about 70mph egts are sittin at 1200. now i was goin from off the gas to about 15% throttle just to keep my speed steady and i was getting a popping very faint every once and a while. i'm running rich for sure from the signs that the cars giving me like a lil black smoke when i shift and my shitty gas milage. so i'm confused i'm goin to the dyno on tuesday so i dont want to mess anything up til i know for sure but i just wanted some opinions.

maybe just backfiring or backpressure buildup when u dropped the speed?

Detonation can happen in all kinds of conditions. Get access to a logger before you hit the dyno.
