#7210, "Turbo and wastegate compatability"

Alrighty, boys and girls,

my manifold on my "custom" turbo kit is officially cracked. It is/was a equal lengths, tubular manifold similar to TOMMYBOYS. It's cracked on runners 1,2, and 3 and for the past 2 wks, I've been hearing it sputter but I only thought that the manifold wasn't bolted down enough but when I pulled the heat wrap off the manifold, there they were some disturbing cracks. *note* never piece together your own turbo kit, it's a pain...now my question to your turbo gurus *MWC, THUNDER, STAN, WYATT, JASON, etc....* Now I'm going to try and get it welded (if I can get it off) but I'm scared that it's just going to crack again so.......

Ok the scenario, saw an ad on the parts trader for a star manifold, THAT"S it...nothing else, I know that I need a downpipe, ok, I'll worry about that later....my questions

1. Besides the t3/t4 turbo, what other turbo will bolt up to the star manifold, ????

and IF a turbo that has an internal wastegate can bolt on, what do i do about the hole that was for the wastegate??

2. What wastegate can I use besides the Delta?? I'm not too familiar with how the external wastegate works?

Thanks all! I'm still pretty green with the turbo thing and if MWC never came up here to help me finish up my "project" than I wouldn't have ever finished, NOW i run into this, I hope somebody can shed some light onto this.

As I remember (from my studies emoji ), you will, of course, be required to get some sort of Garrett turbo. That means NO mitsu turbos will fit. Also, since the STAR manifold uses a T3/T4 turbo, I believe that means the turbo side (that mounts to the manifold) is the "T3" side. Therefore, you can mount any turbo that has the same T3 turbo inlet size. Now, I'm just generically referring to the T3 turbo (or combinations thereof),I'm sure there's a plethora of differing Garret turbos with the same size turbo inlet as the T3/t4 Star turbo.

As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure that all of those NER turbos that was posted on the board before would fit. I'm guessing Wyatt/Sean would use a bunch of compatible fitting Garret turbos, so they could use the same exhaust manifold in their turbo line to maximize choices while at the same time minizing part complications. (That's what I would do)

Get a wastegate, or go to a machine/welding shop, so they could fabricate a bolt-on "cover" to eliminate the "use" of that hole.

That I don't know, but why not just use a Delta wastegate. They're cheap, and if not tampered with (translation: use a boost controler and don't screw with the wastegate spring), should serve you well.

Jason,

So you're telling that my t-too small will bolt right up?? hmmmmmmm? that would be cool....seeing that I wouldn't have to get a new turbo right away...

and if that's teh case...would the exhaust side of turbo bolt up to the downpipe that's on my t-25 right now??

Just throwing some things around. Thanks

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the T-25 won't fit. Although it's a Garrett turbo, it's much smaller than a "manly" sized T03 turbo.

I'm not for sure, but if you have the turbo on hand, you can always attempt to see if it fits. I would bet that if you go to a welder/machine shop, they might be able to rig some sort of conversion plate. Really, that's all those 16g conversion kits are that 4g63 peeps have to use.

Good luck!

What jason said. anything with a T3 turine (T3 or T3/T4 hybrid). I've seen both new for as little as $450

Weld it or bolt it shut.

Well the Deltagates only about $175-200. Tials 35mm Wastegate is a direct replacement for the Deltagate. Its about $200-250. They works the same as an internal. bleeds off exhaust when boost is reached. Only difference is it releases it into a dump tube instead of the turbine housing.

A t-25 will bolt right up to the flange on the starr as well as a HRC turbo, being that they both use a T/3 size flange (2"X4"). Buy a custom manifold (from me) and use your T-too small until you have some cash for the HRC

Here is what I have have.
JE 8:8.1 with rings boared .20 over
Seinze custom rods (600+hp)
Knife edged and shaved crank
Clevite bearings
Shaved oil pump to bump up oil preasure
Stage 3 ported and pollished head
twin Accel coil packs
PT lashers
ov

LAST EDITED ON 09-Jul-01 AT 11:34 AM (PST)

Really Rage? heh...learn something new every day. emoji

The reason why I didn't think so (besdies obvious sizing differences) is from listening to 4g63 guys talk. Apparently, when switching from a T-25 stock turbo, they have to use a conversion kit to switch to a T-25, and also need to acquire a completely different exhaust manifold when going to a T03/04 turbo. Thus, is why I didn't understand how a STAR manifold could support all the turbos you have listed (S16g, T03/04, and T-25).

On another note, it might be kinda fun to slap on one of those cheap T-25's for fun and spool up mad fast while boosting 15 lbs! heheh
