I am thinking about putting a turbo kit into my 99 ecipse gs .. I am debating over putting a turbo kit on this car or seling it and getting a 97 gst .. but the problem is that im 18 years old and insurance would be about 280 a month on a gst (180 now) and that ive put a body kit on and z3 fenders on this car and it's really clean and fully loaded.
1. In your opinion, money wise .. should i keep this car and add a turbo or sell it and get a gst?
I know there are hundreds of topics about what turbo kit is best (ive spend whole nights reading about them) but im thinking about the star stage 1 and adding a intercooler like greddy (i want an intercooler that takes up the whole space infront of the bumper) or maybe a stage 2 (i'm leaning more towards star b/c of price and bigger turbo)
2. So what is a good budget (not cheapo) price that i could blow away a gst? How much will it cost me?
(keeping in mind that im 18 and have a part time job .. 6000 bucks is not budget for me)

on just a turbo kit you can run enough boost to beat stock gs-t's but the problem is you also run the risk of blowing your engine...
You will end up spending more money on turboing your car and having it have the efficiency that a stock turbo would have right out of the box. You are turboing a non turbo car where as the turbo version is built for it already.
you can pick up a gst for around 5g if you look around, perhaps even less with a lil bit of mods done to it. Compare to turboing your car(stage 2 or stage 1 with fmic kit) your looking at least 3 there, then if you want to build the motor, which you might have to do later on if you blow anyway(always a good idea), looking at like 1g for part if not more, upgraded axels, injectors possibly if your running higher boost, gauges(i spent 600 alone on 4), turbo timer, and whatever you can pull out that you would find more necessary. This isnt including any labor. I was luckky and did the kit my self as most do..but internal engine work..im somewhat scared of and i know shops charge a decent ammount for that to get done so that just my analysis of it....

I dont mean to be an ass. But this question/opinion has been asked many times. Search, search, search. And Can I just say ONE thing about gst's... Crankwalk! Turbo your GS. you will love it! Ive been drinking a little too much tonight to go into detail with you. But Im sure someone else will/can. If not, I will try my best tommorrow for you to understand "both" sides. At least from what I know that is.

well you can always get eh HRC stage 2 with the FMIC upgrade for 3k+/ The FMIC fills up the whole mout and then some. Just be prepare to have emergency funds in case somethign does go wrong. Oh and the 20g or the 25g is more than your car can handle.
Or you can just trade for a good used GST and dump money into that.

You'll tear gs-t's up all day with a star stage II but I mean if I could go back I would have gotten a GS-T actually... But thats why I'm getting a 1st gen TSI AWD and maybe building the RS as a side project as it is blown and down now

ok dont get me wrong on this people cause i am all for turboing 2gnt's and i would love to turbo my own but this whole crankwalk thing is a bunch of bullshit imo. everyone makes it seem like every damn turbo 2g suffered it when in reality, if you look at teh numbers, hardly any did. for years 95-96 and 98-99, i believe it was something like 9% sufferered where as 97 was teh fuckup year with 17%. while thats a good amount, its not as bad as people make it out to be. besides, if your that worried about buying a gst/x and teh crank walking on your ass, swap in a 6 bolt engine from a 1g and you will have nothing to worry about.

you really want a car that is 'prone' to anything? you talk as though building a rs is more money then buying a gst and swapping a 6bolt engine in. the costs are around the same, still have to upgrade turbos and everything that we do. i like the 420a, more modern, and alot easyer to work on. and not to mention the mitsu trannies.

see thats what i didnt want to be interpreted from what i said. i would much rather boost my rs instead of getting a gst, i was just trying to show people that crankwalk isnt as big of an issue as people make it out to be.

420a's are a cinch to work on. i really like that fact. i personally saved 200 dollars a month on insurance by not buying a turbo gsx.
as for the crankwalk issue, the numbers i guess can be misleading. i dont know if it has to do with how hard you drive your car, but just about everyone i know who has owned a gst/tsi has had crankwalk, and some even twice. wierd, but thats just my personal experience.
if anything i would buy a 1g 6 bolt awd model, if i was going to do that. wait, i did that already.
its all personal preference. i enjoy working on my car, like the satsifaction i have in accomplishing turboing an n/a car. if its what you enjoy doing, i say go for it.
