Ok, this happened tonite when i got off from work. I get in my car and when i try to start the car, it turns over tries to stay on but dies....I try again this time giving gas and it idles. When i go to put it in gear and go, it dies. I start it again drive it to a stop light and it idles higher than normal, around 1100...use to be down around 7-800. Car still boosts ok and gets plenty of fuel and egt's read fine. what could this be? If it were a vac leak I couldnt drive the car at all could I?

You could drive with a vacuum leak, but you probably would feel quite a bit of loss in power if the leak was significant enough.

As for your starting/idling problem, what type of fuel system mods have you done? Maybe you have a loose wire somewhere to your fuel pump or even a slight fuel leak.

LAST EDITED ON 06-Jul-01 AT 10:45 PM (PST)

Well, I'm hesitant to tell you to go out and buy a new IAC(Idle air controller), so make sure everything else is koscher. Is your higher idle steady, or does it bounce up and down searching?

I had something similar to this with steady higher idling (without the difficult starting or dying) and used some intake/throttle body cleaner as per the instructions, and my idle came back down and idled much smoother. I'm sure having a turbo causes some blowby/oil buildup in there and may cause some problems with the IAC or TPS with excessive oil coating.

Also, just make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks that would cause your intake to see excessive air and thusly cause the higher idle.

Keep us posted!

I had a problem like that with my wife's probe. The problem was the air intake was not on all the way. it looked fine but the bottom part of the rubber was off a little. Once i got it on all the way everything was fine.

I checked the error codes to see what was wrong and i think i have them correct....12,61,and a 25. I believe i counted the blinks right. I looked on the chart but, have no clue what they mean? 61 is not even on there. 12 has something to do with the batt being disconnected?? 25 has to do with some :thingamageger"being off -+200.

Hey chris.....The 61 is something to do with the map sensor. I have noticed that a lot of people that have AFC's get that error code (not a big deal). The 25 is the idle air control. Just like what jason said. Replace it and you should fine.

Both the TPS and the ISC are located on the BACK side of the throttle body nearest the firewall. The top plug (from the ECU wiring harness) goes into the TPS and the lower one goes into the ISC.

Just go buya Chiltons' since there are nice pictures involving these. (OR better yet, go to Ebay and buy a factory service manual for about the same price, as I did)

From what i've read, 25 is Idle air control circuits. Make sure those wires aren't grounded out on anything.. like your EGR pipe. Happened to me. they do run close to some hot stuff.

First of all let me say thanks for everyones help, most appreciated. Secondly, with a little time before work today i got some TB cleaner and small tooth brush, my intensions were to clean the inside up some to see if it helps. I took off the TB and man was the inside blacker than mike tyson! I sprayed the TB down brushed real good and sprayed the inside of the intake mani. Put it all back together and after clearing the cleaner through the exhaust it idles like a kitte emoji and starts right up! Cleaning helped but i still have the codes so, i guess i need to replace the IAC or check the wiring as Dino suggested.

Also, if you guys have not cleaned your TB lately, do so....TB's need love to:)

If it idles okay, reset your ECU by pulling a battery terminal and see if they stay gone. If it idles clean, why bother paying for parts you may not need?
