#71505, "EGT Gauge goes crazy!!!"

Yesterday I installed the EGT Gauge and everthing went good. I test the car and it was OK. Today at lunch time, going from home to the work place, the EGT going crazy. Jumping from 900 to 500 to 1000, like crazy. Cruising at about 45 to 50mph. The car felt just right, no hessitation, no rpm drop-down, nothing. When I press on the gas, it will get to normal operation. Continue at 45 to 50mph and make the same thing. Few blocks from the office it stop going crazy and stay steady at what I assume is normal temperature ioperation. Has anyone has this problem? Also, there is no problem for the cable to touch the manifold. What can it be? When I get home I will check the wiring.

Yeah, it sounds like a wiring issue. Check the probe wires, and be sure the gauge has a GOOD ground, and power source.

yep agree, it's either the ground or power wire to the gauge being that it's loose or bad contact.

My EGT gauge did that (POS autometer); try what the above said.

I fixed mine by covering the probe wiring that connects to the yellow connection wire from heat. I used 3/8 oil pressure hose.

Jeez you'd think something that measures heat should be empervios to thermal heat emoji

I will try the hose. I use the heat-shrink rubber for the connection to the probe but I don't think that will really resist all that heat.
Thanks everybody emoji

The same thing happened to me too. My EGR pipe melted my EGT probe wires, and the needle freaked out. Solution? Remove the EGR system.

The answer:

The guage MUST have a good ground and power. I suggest drawing the gauges power from the HVAC bulb....it works great for me, and ground it to a nice ground....dont share it with anything. After doing this...mine worked fine...and I had the exact same issue you had with the insane needle.
