#71237, "A thanks to everyone that helped....pics and costs of my 14b setup inside"
May-19-04 06:44 PM by lickscissors

well everyone...my car is finally running and running pretty well.... i got it tuned allright, i know it still needs some fine adjustments, but for now im happy.... here is a price list of what i paid for everything:
downer engine- (2001 neon 20k miles sohc engine) 200
eagle rods - 300
JE 9.6:1 pistons - (ebay) 330
turbo and manifold - 340 shipped
rfl bov - 50 shipped
255 fuel pump - 55 shipped
starion fmic - 150 shipped
o2 housing to make downpipe - 25 shipped
intercooler pipes bent - 30
downpipe bent -20
sfmu - (ebay) 125
missing link - 30
30# injectors - 70
egt gauge - 75 shipped
boost/oil gauge - 90
mls headgasket - 45
total: $1935

i built my engine myself...it went well and i have had no problems with the engine...i used custom made pistons i got from ebay...they are stock bore/stock compression JE pistons...i took my chances with them and im actually happy with the decision... i welded my own downpipe...i cut the flanges off of the 14b o2 housing and welded the downpipe to that...thats my favorite part about the setup...im proud of the way it turned out.... the fmic was modified to 2.25" by my father who works at alcoa...i cut the holes and he welded it up at work...the intercooler pipes are 2.5" exhaust pipes...i welded the rfl flange and i welded a rim around the IC pipes to keep them from blowing off... the wastegate actuator was moved under the turbo...all i did was shorten the arm and weld a washer on it...it wasnt that bad...the oil lines are transmision cooling lines...the oil line off of the turbo is a coolant line from a 13g turbo...i made corbins air/fuel gauge and molded it into my dash....i wish i would of taken more pictures along the way...but i just get excited and cant stop..... i still need to make some sort of heat sheild and a support arm for the turbo....i dont know how the manifold will hold up without support...let me know what you think....right now im running 9psi until i install the 450s and water injection....

my mods other than turbo are:
greddy exhaust
msd ignition
aem cam gears
udp
short throw shifter
tockico illumina/neuspeed springs
gs rear disks, tsi power doors, gsx seats
the car was also painted by myself

modified intercooler

engine far away

engine close

downpipe

air fuel gauge

dash

full inside (homemade floor mats)

my car...mmm...stillen

thanks....yeah my aim name is lickscissors also...im not on there much but you can email me at lickscissors@hotmail.com ....the hardest part about the 14b setup is the downpipe....i think it would of been a lot easier if i just ran the wastegate pipe straight down and exhausted it to the air...but cant do that with emissions... i also had to modify the stock j-pipe for the 14b..i cut it and turned it about 30degrees and rewelded it...that way it was sticking straight out...i still need to paint all my pipes so when i pull them all out, ill try and get a picture of everything...and yes it did cost right around 2 grand for everything...i left out some stuff like the rings and bearings...but that was about 125 for those...but then if you subtract the cost of selling my engine (500) my CAI (75) headers (150) i got next to nothing in it....and the gauge pod is working great....and tim97, im using your injectors and missing link if you dont remember....thanks again for all the help, i seriously would of had no idea where to start without this site

I'm really impressed with that setup.

Did Alain make that mani? Is it his old version or the newer version?

Could you take a couple more pics of the turbo area, showing the fan clearance and turbo outlet to IC connections?

I'm sure you haven't tuned it yet, but im curious whenever you get it setup what timing retard at what boost levels you're using with the 14b.

Also, yes support that mani REALLY well... use as many brackets as you can fit on the mani, DP, etc. otherwise everything will start cracking at the welds. (See: NER kit)

im planning on making some support brackets...ill try and get some more pictures up soon.... i wish my pocketlogger would stay connected because i kind of need it to tune....i think im running rich still because i keep getting cel 1294 (air fuel metering)...im pretty sure its rich, not lean.... the downpipe clears the ac line fairly well...it comes close to the compressor, but not the lines...i believe it is alains manifold...i actually bought the manifold and turbo off of neo4b? off of this site about a year ago... thanks for the support everyone

I wanna know where you got the aluminum pipes for the starion. I wanted them to reweld the opening for the intercooler for me, but they said only aluminum would stick and they didn't have any. They said a 2.25" aluminum pipe would cost about 85 bucks. They meaning the welding company. So I was stuck with the stock pipe opening until I find a way to weld it with new pipes.

1001 posts!! hell yeah.... i went with the 14b because of the spool up time, ability to push some good numbers, easibility of upgrading, and it was cheap... im hoping for CLOSE to 300whp once i water inject it and turn up the boost... i dont think its that far out of the question with a 14b.... i actually just got a Beltronics accelerometer...it is sweet..you can do quarter mile runs almost perfectly accurate...it was only 100$...it also tells you your 60ft, 1000ft, 1/8mile, 0-10,0-20, and so on.... you guys should check in on it....ill let you know my times with the 30# and 9psi for now though....

hm coo I was a little iffy about that. Im a little boost hungry and that 350 dollar spec clutch is a limiting factor lol but I guess a stock clutch works good..mine grabs like a champ so yeah....

Your setup pretty much looks like mine emoji. Anyway word from the wise. You need to get a heat shield on teh turbo to protect your AC fan. If you do not you will melt through it. My T25 did not produce enough heat to kill that fan, but after only 1 day with the 14B the fan (housing not the actual fan itself) was destroyed. I had to un plug it so it would not come on at all.

Good job man! Glad to see another custom person.
