#70419, "Oil Spraying all in my Engine Bay!!!! Tell Me what could cause this??"

I boosted my 97 manual GS and running through a Star Performance Stage 2 Kit. I am running around ten psi. I ran good for days, untill now. I am spraying oil all over my engine bay. I mean a good amount of oil. I lost around three quarts driving around thirty miles. I tried cleaning all the oil and try to see where it is coming from. No success. It does not do it at idle it only does it when I am driving. While I am at idle I have a little white puff of smoke coming from my valve filter. It has a slight miss at idle but, I have oil all over my valve cover and plug wires, a nice pool of oil. That could possibly foul a plug. I still have good power at reasonable rpm's I ran 7 psi on the way home with this problem and it took with good amount of power. I have no internal work done to the car. Just a Stage 2 kit and Greddy Exaust. I want everyone to suggest what the problem is before I assume. I could of blown a head gasket, fry a piston or rings, destroyed a fuel injector, or a problem with the PCV valve. What do you think?? Please respond.

At 10psi, especially on the STAR turbo you were skating on thin ice to begin with. YOu most likely cracked a ringland on one of your pistons...

like stated above you may have cracked a ring land, personally I wouldnt go over 7 psi without internals on a star kit, I know I error to the side of caution. but 10 is to much. do you have a catch can? if not you could use one to at least keep oil from gettin all over.

Yeah Ive heard some info of a catch can. I dont have one though. I am not clear on this. I was running great on 10 psi for awhile and the next day the car decided not to do it anymore. I am going to run a compression test on it tomorrow. To see If I didnt fry a piston or a ring. How do I find more info on a oil catch pan?

why is 10psi more risky than a hahn kit?

I would be my left nut you blew at least one piston ring land. I killed 3 in one shot my first engine.

Bigger turbo for the star kit, more hp, = more chances of breaking stuff.

Yea but according to Hahn you can run 280 hp daily.....10 psi per wyatte is like 276hp i thought?

Correct me but hahn claims 280 hp is like 10-11 psi right?

10 psi on a Star kit should be quite risky (on stock internals). I wouldn't suggest anyone try it (although many have). 10 psi on the Star turbo is a lot of power for a stock bottom end. That kind of power requires alot of fuel. Using stock fuel injectors, it takes extremely high fuel pressures to supply that much fuel. Star generally just supplies a Walbro in-tank pump. It can't reliably supply enough fuel at the required pressure. If you can't supply the fuel while boosting, you run lean. Run lean and you detonate. Detonate and you break ring lands. Break ring lands and you get blow-by. That blow-by blows right out the breather on the valve cover and dumps oil everywhere.

I wouldn't do 10 psi on a HRC kit either (on stock internals). But, at least the turbo has less demanding fuel needs and the fuel system includes a good in-line fuel pump.

Turbo kit manufacturers want to sell turbo kits (duh). They will quote the highest boost and power numbers they can without raising too many eyebrows. You always have to cut their claims back to a safe level if this is your only mode of transportation and you aren't a tuning genius.

Ok corbin i follow the thought now...i really didnt need a run down of how boost builds detonation ect. I am not running a factory fuel system by any means and especially not factory injectors. My point is 10psi is unsafe if inadequate fuel is provided. I dont have that problem so the 10psi of pressure by it self is not the breaking factor...detonation is. Would be nice if someone was more specific when they say you cant run 10psi. the fact is you cant run 5 psi if you cant supply fuel.
