Leaking CHRA seals. Rebuild it, or upgrade.

Right.

That thing is definately burning oil. That turbine shouldn't be black, it should be WHITE from the superheated wheel burning off exhaust carbon.

The smoke is likely intermittant because it's pooled up in your IC and piping, and occasionally the motor sucks some in. Clean out all your piping and your IC while you're at it.

Thanks guys.

the compressor side was clean. no oil in the IC piping coming off the compressor housing. Its only on the exhaust side... that make any difference?

not really no, you're still burning oil...its just the superheated exhasut gasses that are burning it as opposed to what dino was saying with your motor sucking some up and burning it sometimes. needless to say, you gotta rebuild that guy. turbo rebuilds are fun emoji

Yeah. I'd still check it the IC and piping, though.. you never know.

Now you can buy that 20g you've always wanted.

Just be SURE your oil return line is not blocked/kinked, ect..If there is any restriction in the drain line, then it can cause oil leaks at the seals..You need a path stratight as possible to the pan, with a proper sized drain line..just check that before you go rebuilding the turbo or anything like that..

I think i may have the same problem. I just thought it was my oil drain fitting leaking. I have some slight smoke and can smell it when i come to a stop. I guess i will pull it apart this weekend to find out for sure.

had the same exact thing happen to my s16g, and it didn't have that many miles on it either. Not only that but there was nothing wrong with my return or feed or anything. What a bunch of bullshit.

I hate to say I told you so... but I seem to think I did...LOL

I had the same thing a while back before my last turbo rebuild... that's how I knew. And your lucky... if it got worse it could have destroyed the bearings and the comp. wheel...

Time for a bigger turbo me thinks...

I've decided that Mitsubishi turbos are way too fragile...LOL

That's assuming the s16G has the same CHRA as the regular 16G.

umm.. i could be way off base here (but i doubt it).. but WHITE exhaust is burning coolant.. if oil is burning it makes blue smoke.

As far as I know, if you rebuild your turbo, and take out the turbine/compressor wheels, it will have to be balanced by a shop..I believe Corbin rebuilt his own S16G and it failed not long after..the rotating assembly needs to be in perfect balance or it will tear up the bearings..I would just have HRC or a specialty turbo shop do the rebuild/balance IMO..

HRC/Mitsubishi turbos have a 12 month warranty. I suggest calling HRC to get it replaced.
