MLS = Multi Layer Steel. That's the stock one. You can get a whole gasket kit from your Mitsu dealer for about 130. It comes with upper and lower intake mani gaskets, HG, Exhaust mani gasket, a valve cover gasket and a bunch of other little ones. Basically everything you need. Summit Racing has a Copper MLS HG for our cars for about $53 I think. Go to www.summitracing.com and check it out.

I ran an aftermarket MLS headgasket from Cometic and it is leaking 3,000 miles later (I torqued the head bolts to 70ft/lbs which is recommended by ARP but I may have had better results if I torque it to 90ft/lbs).
I just bought an MLS Head Gasket from the Mitsubishi dealer and its construction is totally different from the Cometic. It is a Chrysler gasket (no big surprise) and has many noteable differences between it and the Cometic version.
I think you are much better off running a Manufacturer's Head gasket as they usually revise the gasket every so often due to a well-known problem. This garantees that you are getting the best gasket at the time. I am not sure how often aftermarket companies change/update their design.

Just did a head gasket install using the Upper End Gasket Set from the dealer. Cost me 90 bucks (employee pricing). Works excellent. Make sure you follow the three step torque procedure as specified in the service manual. You must have a torque wrench and 3-jaw/5-ton pulley puller for a head gasket install. Have fun with the timing belt cover. There probably wont be one when you're done.

Getting the dealer MLS gasket is good advice
About removing the timing belt cover - I was tempted to destroy it myself, but be patient. Use the 3 jaw/5-ton puller mentioned above to remove the crank pulley, once you do that, you must remove the idler pulleys on the timing belt. With all that off .... then you can remove the timing belt cover. It takes time, but it is possible.
BTW- I washed mine with thinner while it was off and clear coated. It's all glossy black now and looks really nice - at least as nice as a timing belt cover can look.
