#68421, "Big boost on a stock bottom end"

I've read a few articles about motors that have been tuned (via forced induction) to horsepower far exceeding what the bottom end is supposedly good for. An SR20DET good for 600hp for instance. Although the articles were not in depth (only a sidebar in a magazine), it sounds like this was achieved using really big turbines, a rebuilt head, a big intercooler, camshafts, etc. The turbine was an HKS, probably equivalent to a Super 25G, and the headwork was porting and polishing, high-performance springs, cams, like that sort of thing but it was stock pistons, rods and crank.
How does something like this work? There was no mention of boost levels or anything. I heard that the higher the motor is revving, the lower the stress on the pistons (but conversely the higher the stress on the rods and crank). So this motor could have been developing peak power in excess of 9,000rpm but then wouldn't that overstress the rods?
I thought that the article was interesting, but I haven't had much luck finding out more about the car or the tuners.

You're going off in eleventybillion different tangents. Those motors (SR20, etc) are built exceptionally well right from the factory. The stock piston's and rods on a 2GNT are not. End of story. 8PSI.

our ring lands like to break at about 8-10 psi over time. Our stock rods will start to bend at about 15psi. The bottom line is dont run over 8 psi on our stock bottom end. And if you do run 8 psi make sure it is perfectly tuned. If you want more boost build your engine for it.

lol this thread is sad

i boosted 10psi for 20K miles until i blew a headgasket, wah wah.

ive heard of someone who has ran 13psi on stock bottom end for a year

you just need to know some tricks of the trade, keep that boost cool, keep that octane up, grow a nut and stop boosting 8psi imo, unless you want to play it 'safe' emoji

dont mind me though, im probly to boost happy for my own good.

once again though, 10psi....20K miles, nuff said. the motor already had 120K on it too emoji

Not all motors are the same. We have a guy here in AZ that ran 10psi on a stock longblock for years before blowing.

I blew my motor, twice actually(stock internals)..first time, had a strange boost spike to 14 psi..I'm pretty sure it had detonation..cracked a ring land on the #3 piston..swaped that piston out for one Matt_95tgs's old pistons, and then ran that around 8 psi or so for a bit while longer..Then after trying to tune out my boost spike issue, boost hit around 11.5 psi, had plenty of fuel, NO detonation, and cracked piston #2..then I said enough, time for rebuild emoji Anything over 8-9 psi, and you are playing with fire..its been proven time and time again here. It goes beyond proper tuning..cast internals just can't take this kind of power for very long..my motor had around 70,000 miles at the time also..220 compression accross too(before it blew of course). Unless you have the time and money to spend on a new built block, dont run past 8 psi..If you do, then boost that shit emoji

well this is why im glad i did this...this should help everyone.. emoji

here ya go...its comes down to the motor..and how u drive it..turbo 8 u is sooooo right tho...of 420a held 10 psi no prob, hell some even boosted 13 psi and didnt blow

well here u go
1. John’s RS-T – Daily, 6 PSI – Track, 9 PSI- 1 year strong, and still going!

2. Kurt's GS-T - Stock Engine, 8 PSI, 1 Year (Replaced with built motor, nothing wrong with block (210 psi across all cylinders), just wanted more boost) - Built Engine, 10 PSI, 5 months (waiting for weather to get better and turn up the boost)

3. Justin RST- 6 months(12,000 miles) of abuse at 8psi, many spikes to 10-11psi...93 octane, stock injectors, base FMU, Motor still in great shape!

4. Extremes’ RS-T – 9 psi daily, for a while and motor was ok. Ran 11 psi then cracked a ring land

5. Jsupetran’s RS-T- 5 psi daily, nothing more – after many 350 mile trips from school to home, still going strong!

6. Lee's RS-T: 19 or 10 psi daily. Depending on what level I set the two stage boost controller to. Built motor with Wiseco pistons

7. Dark Reality RS-T - Star Stage 2: Daily 8psi-10psi, no problems till upgraded to 36lb injectors and 12,000mi of boosting, then cracked piston. forced rebuild-12 psi daily- till 50lb injector upgrade-18-20psi daily. no problems yet. currently fuel system change in progress

8. Thom’s RST Star Stage II-little over a year at 7 pounds, just turned it up to 8.5 =) 5,000 miles over due for a timing belt change and no runs at the track

9. . Mark's RS-T – Seldom Driven (been down for a long time for a new head gasket, unrelated to turbo), 7 to 8 PSI (regulated by an Apex'i AVC-R), street only, 7 months, 2000 miles moremoremore

10. RyaN95i4 -
Pump gas: 1.5 yrs at 8-10psi then 6months at 12psi (daily)
Pump gas + xylene: 15psi (intermittenly throughout the first 2 years, also saw rare spikes to 18-20psi)
--Car was daily driven, and ALWAYS driven hard -- have yet to meet anyone who drove their car as hard as often as I do. During this time, motor had never been opened. Fuel setup: 30lb injectors, SFMU, walbro. s16g w/ FMIC.--

--Eventually cracked a ringland after 2 years of abuse (and 3/4 cylinders still had perfect compression). Piston failure was due to fatigue, not detonation.--
--Now, car runs 18psi daily: built motor + 8inj setup.--

11. Corsagsbo RS-T - 12-14psi on stock bottom end. HRC stage 2, 30lb inj. 20,000 miles of abuse, compression was still good but could have gone at any time..
next was, JE 8.8:1/Crower rod combo.. I put roughly 12,000 miles of HARD miles then developed blow-by.
now, in the middle of a custom CP 2.2l set-up

12. Matt 95tgs’s GS-T – 7 psi for a year, Stock bottom end, No problems. 13 psi for two weeks straight, then cracked 3 ring lands, but still car still ran.
--Now forged internals, 17 psi daily, 24 PSI at the track!!!!Running for 1 ½ years now, and still going strong!

13. Robotechsm RS-T - 5 psi, stock bottom end, still going!

14. Phrenzy’s RS-T – 8 psi , stock bottom end, still strong!

15. Actingrezy – 10 psi for a year and a half, 11-12 at the track…Cracked a ringland in December… best time to date 14.1 @ 101mph 2.4 60' on 18's 11psi

16. Jason ESi-T- Ran 5-8 psi for 3 years or so, 37k miles. NO problems ever really with the engine. Ended with 175 across. I wanted more so, I rebuilt (JE/Crower). Run 12-17 psi daily. Up to 20 psi when necessary. Spared nothing when it came to fuel throughout. 8 injectors (235's/440's) back when I had stock internals. Always ran pump gas.

17. Gilbert's GS-T: - Stock Engine, 6-7PSI, 6 months (engine still reads 210-215 compression all across)

18. RS-T ran 8-10psi for 6 months, had problems with leaks and spool up time. I have alot of blowby now so I just purchased a howell rebuild kit(sold first one) again and am rebuilding this month. Plan to run 15psi with super 16g, 30lbs injectors, sfmu, walbro in-tank fuel pump, greddy fmic, and accell in-line fuel pump.

if i get that list longer it should be a sticky

Over time everyone has formed a general concensus that 8psi is the threshhold. Sure you can run more...chacnes of blowing it grow exponentially with anymore boost....

19. Chamuko- star stg II: 40K miles (2,yrs) 10psi, 4K miles (4 months) at 11 psi, down for rebuild. engine had 20K miles when turbo'd, now at 64K. AT, everything stock. One spike to 14psi

allllllrightttt
