Hey guys,

I just heard back from my machine shop and now i'm totally confused.... The machine shop said I lost 3 out of the 4 pistons... these are JE pistons..... WTF??!?? He said that they were overheated very bad... but it's not water temperature over heat its combustion overheat.... One side on 2 of the 3 pistons the "skirts" were chared and the one i'm guessing the #1 piston was really bad... (it had the lowest compression). He said a cold start revving it up whle it's cold would do this in a heart beat it would tear the crap out of them.

I can only think of maybe ONE time when this happend and this was when I let someone drive it and the "gas" peddle gut stuck and it revved to 7000rpm bounced off the rev limiter twice.. just after starting it....

An other time i could think of it being was when i raced a turbo jetta was doing about 135mph and in 5th gear....

this is when i really started noticing the nocking noise.(piston slap)

Besides these two things what else could cause it... running too lean??? we did lean the the SAFC out quite a bit with the 50lb injects but with the stock injects we didnt lean it out at all...

He says its not water temp heat its combust heat... can someone please explain this to me a little better so that i can prevent this from happening now i have to buy all new fucking pistons....

I dont see you fucking up your pistons by revving it while it is cold. Unless there is no oil of course.

Get some picsof the pistons... we can probably tell a lot from them...

If you have the same spark plugs in the head that you were running pull them out too... they can tell stories also...

Piston slap is due to too much clearance. If you have too much clearance I could see that happening on a cold start because the pistons have not warmed up yet.

Well after talking with Dino I think a few of us suspect that perhaps the former machine shop really messed up on this one getting the bores wrong. I will be getting pictures of the Pistons here probably on Monday. The new engine should be done by the end of next week i'm going to go with J&E pistons again and T.S. rings and cleavit barings..

I trust this new machine shop.. they seem very cool and we took a tour of their machine shop.
