#6742, "can't control boost help appreciated"

Hey fellas I need some help here. I build boost and all but I can't rev higher than 4 grand before I get to the 5 pound limit with my Star Stage I. I have the wastegate turned out pretty far. I haven't had time to put the controller in yet believe it or not. But I'm gonna make time this week to fool with it all. Any ideas? I'm getting tired of shifting via what my boost gauge says.

Shit is all apart. Typical...

Are you overboosting??

If so, make sure you have your wastegatre plumbed correctly. There are towo holes: On on the side of the wastegate, and one on top. You want to be plumbed to the one on the side.

Hmm that sounds about right. My boost tops out at 5psi at 4k also, lower under some occasions. It should go no higher than 5 if you have a 7lb spring on your wastegate.

Hey Dakone, I owe you a beer if this works. I've been plumbed on the top. So all I do is move the "L" fitting to the side? Hey also can anybody tell me which side the Turbo timer harness is supposed to be hooked up? Is it on top of the wheel or below it?
Thanks

Yes, move it to the side.. the hole is on the side closest to the turbo itself.

Don't feel bad. I did it myself once... 15PSI sure is nice emoji

I moved the "L" to the side but there's an opening where it used to be. Is it supposed to be open or should I a get a threaded plug? Thanks for all the help all!

Leave it open... It only opens to the top of the diaphram (read: nowhere important.)

well I'm screwed. I switched the L fitting and installed the timer. I took it for a drive to the grocery store. I noticed it was idling around 1500-2000. I thought nothing b/c I had disconnected the batt and it takes a little to let it "learn" again. I got my stuff and started her back up. It was running a little rough and the rpms hadn't calmed down any. I got about a mile and I couldn't see behind me due to the black cloud. It's oil for sure. It only happens under accleration. It runs like sh*t also under accel only. I don't feel like it's rings b/c it would smoke all the time if they were toast. I'm not sure it's the snail b/c the car shouldn't run like crap even if it were blown up. Sorry just venting a little. I'll figure it out tonight when I can look at it.

Shit is all apart. Typical...

Uh oh.

Sounds like that wastegate was stuck shut a little too long.

Can you hear it open under boost?

hey darkone can you shoot me some compression test numbers quick? I know if they are close to each other but I want to know how much damage. Ex. 5-5-6-5 is good in relation but really bad for compression per cylinder. I think I'll start there and pray for no damage.

i think stock spec is 200-220 and no more than 15lb difference between cylinders.. I don't have any actual numbers handy, but if you do a search of the board, you'll find some.

Hey Darkone, the compression test that I just did shows no more then 10 psi difference. 3 of the 4 plugs are doing the backstroke though. I know the oil in the cylinders makes the test more of a "wet" test but all of the cylinders are still consistent. Give me some ideas here--there could be some good beer in this for ya! Hooking up vaccuum line wrong wouldn't do this could it? What about the seals in and around the valve cover?

Shit is all apart. Typical...

LAST EDITED ON 28-Jun-01 AT 02:44 PM (PST)

Hooking up the wastegate incorrectly certainly could have caused this.. But if the compression numbers are okay, i'd wager nothing is broken. When you say your plugs are swimming, are you speaking of the electrode or the top half? In other works, the sparky end or the end the plug wire connects to? If it just the top, then it's probably bad seals around the sparkplug wells. if it's the electorde, well.. you may have a problem. if it's the elctrode end, obviously oil is being introduced into your combustion chamber, either by worn rings or a cracked ring land.

Well I hate to say it but it's electrode end (sparky end. They're definately oil fouled. Maybe I should try another comp test again? There was NO oil coming out the top of the valve cover though.

Have someone do a leak down test.. that'll give you an idea of wear or damage without having the variable of oil in the combustion chamber. I think there's a vfaq on it if you want to do it yourself.

Buddy brought up a good point, What about my valve guides and seals? Oil can get in only two real ways-- from the bottom or from the top. He seem to think that it would be awful hard for oil to get past the compression ring going up esp. if there is no real bad leak showing on the comp test. Any thoughts on that maybe? It's much cheaper than a rebuild at this point-- not to mention I hear port/polish entering this conversation real soon =)

Shit is all apart. Typical...
