#6704, "boost question"

any booster can answer this...

the HRC kit supposedly works at 2500 and up RPM.

my question (not HRC specific):

Does this mean you reach full boost at 2500, or it just starts spooling at 2500?

if it tops at 2500, then does this mean you have ... say 4 psi at 2200 and 5 at 2500 (*if you were running 5)?

or does it mean that until about 2500, its just an NA kicking out whatever the NA kicks out at 0-2400 RPM, and at 2500 its at 5psi?

OR - NA til about 2500, then 1 psi at 2500, and builds up form that?

Thanks a lot.

I'd say it probably begins to spool closer to 2700 rpm's or so and that's all dependent on the gear, throttle position and speed and so on.

Meaning, if I'm in 4+ gear and above, it may even take less than 2700 rpm's or whatever to be at FULL boost. But in 1st gear, it's be hard to reach full boost by 4000 rpm's at a normal take off just because 1st gear winds out so quickly. I'd say the 2700 rpm full spool up thing is for either 3rd or 4th gear. 2nd gear is probably a more interesting and more used gear and would be closer to my estimates above. Either way, at that quick of a spool up, it's exactly where you want it.

A different story happens when I drive my brother's GS-T with a T-25. It's a totally different feeling. Because he doesn't have a boost guage yet, I don't know exactly when the thing starts to spool up, but the torque comes so quick, I'm sure it's getting full boost before 3000 rpm's in ANY GEAR. The problem is, it runs out of power by 5000 rpm's. I can see why the Mitsu people chose this turbo. It's loads of FUN in-town, because at the touch of the throttle in any gear, at any rpm, you immediately feel the surge of the turbo within a couple hundred rpm's. The problem is when you want to play with the big boys, and need to wind the car out. It runs out of power at the high rpm's and thus is very vulnerable.

The typical storyline in our confrontation is a quick first gear burst by him, and barely stays with me at the start of my second gear (his gears are noticeably shorter), but when mid second occurs for me, the race becomes a true laugher. emoji Whenever we cruise anywhere, he gives me shit not to jump on it too much, as he says it's hard for him to stay with me. (heheh)

LAST EDITED ON 24-Jun-01 AT 01:52 PM (PST)

I've only had mine for a day, but here's what I have noticed. In first gear I hit full boost by about 3200RPMs, second and third seem to be the most effective, and both hit full boost at around 2700 RPM. Fouth and Fifth spool very easily, even under 3000 RPM. The turbo seems to be very responsive for me, for instance, If I'm at about 3500 RPM in second and tap the throttle, it's at positive pressure almost immediately with very little lag.

I love the sounds...."whuuuuusssssssssssssssssssshhhhhhh" emoji

so at what rpms does the boost start going up (not full boost, but just the start of the boost building up)?

Well, to be honest, for me there's not much time in between 0 and 4psi, maybe 3/10ths of a second or so, especially 2nd and 3rd gear. Of course, everything I said pertained to WOT... It all depends on throttle position.

OK...I hit boost at about 2500-2700. But I guess it does matter what gear your in. In first it's about 3000, but in second and third it's 2500-2700. When you do boost, it comes on immediately, like it's so fast you don't even notice its comming on. When your racing, and you shift...boost is not a factor in any other gear except first. What I mean is, when you shift at 5500rmps in first, your rpms are high enough in the next gear, that your already at full boost in second, third, and fourth.

I think the coolest thing is that when your cruzing in say...fourth and you press the peddle in slowly to go faster...you could hear the turbo spool up and watch the neddle on the boost gauge clim emoji Then when you let it off, you could hear the BOV...PSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHH. IT'S B A D ASS!!!!!!!
