I tore my motor down today and I found that #1,2 and 3 pistons rings were wore down to the pistons on the sides (faceing motor mount and tranny) The rings are seased and will not move or spin. To make things worse when they seased they did so with one end of the ring sticking out carving a grove in the cylinder walls of the block. Of coarse not too bad of a grove cause the ring will grind out before the cylinder wall will, but did leave a small scrath like grove in it. So that being said, any ideas from you guys on what you think might have caused this? Pistons and rods look like they can be saved (maybe not the pistons). I have thought of a couple. 1. Oil pump failure 2. Bearings (main) failure 3. When we hoened the block it was not "true" and had too much piston slap or too tight on the sides of the pistons.

I'm not an expert but I'll try from my experience. So don't kill me to bad if I'm way of m-kay

-From what you say here...that's the intake side. So maybe not enough air comming in or going out of the engine??? Like back pressure???

-DAMN!!!! Are there any burn marks?? How are your valves??? Did you spin any bearings??? Maybe you did have a oil pump failure, or maybe your oil pump couldn't pump all the oil your engine needed at the time???
What kinda pistons/rods/rings do you have?? And what do you mean you honed the block???

I have custom steel billet rods and Wiesco pistons. And yes the rings are seased on and will take some serious prying to get off them. After all is said and done it might all just be a waist of time as the pistons might be "non save able". #2 and 3 are copper looking around theoutside of the top of the pistons, the others look normal. I have some pics on my site if you want to see, but the pics kinda suck due to a cheap AZZ camera.

Sounds like either lack of bore diameter, or too much bore. I remember you saying that it sounded like a diesel at idle. Did you have lots of blow-by? The burn marks really makes it sound like it was too tight of a fit. Who did your buildup? Did they give any sort of warranty as to thier labor? You may actually be able to have them repair it at thier expense of you can attribute the failure to a mistake made by the mechanics that did your R&R.

about what darkone said---he's right, some builder's don't their name dragged around so they might eat the cost. Another way to get new pistons is to call the oil pump company and ask to what specification the pump is supposed to run to before failure. BTW if you want to sell the rods let me know how much!

YA, I agree with Darkone and Erik...your bore was probably too big or too small. I would try to get them to eat the cost since they did the work!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!

...did you break in the engine? If the rings are new then I would say probably not a tight fit even with a steady amount of oil. I also don't think it was the pump because they aren't known for failure on our motors. I know for a fact that the factory rings go bad and the cars drink oil from improper breakin, and that is how most fresh Mopar engines react.
Any newly built engine requires 1500 miles of peacful driving to be completely worn in with no regular revving going on. Most people relax up to 1000 miles at least, even a new clutch needs 500 miles of serenity. So the quesion remains did you properly break in your engine? My guess is the rings were worn on 1 side because it weas improperly broken in and that air compressed on side of your rings before they reach the other side (which explains the uneven seazing). Ask to see if that is it and ask yourself and be honest!
