#65787, "8 lb Spring only running 3psi. Any clue why?"

For the Delta wastegates, a 7lb spring will boost about 5psi on the star stage 1 set-up but if you have an 8lb spring and your only getting 3psi on the boost gauge, what could be the problem why this is happening? I'm sure the the shorter the springs the more boost you should be getting correct me if I'm wrong. These kits only comes with 4 springs. Have any of you guys have this happened to you before and what did you do to solve it? I'm thinking an 8lb spring should be giving you at least 6psi. I need some philosophy so fill me in.

if it "spools up" close to the right RPM and you don't get enough boost, it's probably a boost leak.

if it "spools up" at a much much higher RPM than it should, it's probably an exhaust leak.

if it does something else really weird, it's probably a kink or something in the boost gauge line, if you have a mechanical gauge.

did you plug the vacuum line from the westgate to the turbo or route it to the intake manifold? that will change your readings also.
did you plug your gauge line directly to the manifold or tee it off other lines? that will also affect your readings.

check for leaks and then route the vacuum from the westgate to the intake manifold and plug the hole on the compressor. then route your line from the gauge directly to the intake manifold, check for leaks again, now you are set.

I want to thank everyone who helped me figure this problem out. Well, I redid all of my vacuum lines and routed the vacuum line from the wastegate to the intake manifold as stated by whodatt1 and locktied all of the connections. I took it out for a spin and the turbo was screamin like a demond. I got on the highway and downshift to 3rd and floored it to see what the boost gauge would read at high rpm or wot but at the same time I floored it, I heard a pop coming from under the car right below me, not from the muffler but from around the cat converter. Boost kicked in though after that and it felt really good until I had to let off becauseI was hitting 10lbs with an 8lb spring, that's not right, why is that happening? I heard the poping sound two more times when I came back on to the highway from the ramp flooring it again on third and fourth gear. What could be the cause of that as well? I can smell gas too but there is no leak and I figure maybe it's because I just install a new fuel filter three days ago. When the engine is at idle, I can hear a rattling sound from under the car so I took a peak and it sounded like it was coming from the cat converter but I wasn't sure. Brought the Eclipse back home and popped open the hood, everything looked legit so I turned the car off with the hood open I could hear a loud rattle coming from the engine when the car was shutting off and then liquid draining. That is some intense shit. Can you guys fill me in on these problems as well? Sorry for all the hassle but you guys are more worthy to me then my shitty Chiltons book. Thanks guys and more power to you.

well i only have one suggestion for one aspect of your problems... the rattling you're hearing from the cat area might very well be your cat. infact it might be the heat sheild on your cat. i had one of the welds on my heat shield pop off and the my cat rattled like a bitch. i got under there and hacked on the heat shield and that was the end of my problems. i had a catco hi flow cat if that means anything to you. good luck with your glitches.

I didnt know they sold 7 lb and 8 lb spring seperately. I've been searching for about a week after I found out I had a black spring 9-13lb spring. I found springs that where green 3-5, blue 5-7, silver 7-9, and black 9-13. How do you know you have an 8 lb spring?

I wish you a smooth break-in and happy driving.

I didn't know that springs come color coated. Mine aren't. I have four springs that came with my wastegate kit. 8 as in 7- 9psi spring. I'm sure the shorter the spring, the higher the boost. Correct me if I'm wrong.
